Description: Created during WWII, "All American News" was intended to keep African Americans involved in the war effort. The films in this series provide a unique look at the activities of Blacks during the war. Opening title of All-American News (0:08). Footage of marching female and male African American service-members, as well as footage of athletic competitions (0:20). C.A. Scott, Editor of the Atlanta World (the oldest black newspaper in Atlanta, Georgia, founded in 1928), sitting in chair typing (0:35). Narrator describes the accomplishments of C.A. Scott, and introduces his family (0:55). A man Flournoy English is shown sitting in chair smoking cigarette, as narrator describes his efficiency accomplishments (1:15). "Father" Earl Hines is congratulated on his 20th anniversary by Billy Eckstine and describes his many accomplishments in show business (1:50). Billy Eckstine and Earl Hines cut a cake (2:35). African American man dressed as Santa Claus arrives to deliver gifts to children at Camp Shanks, in Orangeburg, New York. The camp was the largest U.S. Army embarkation camp used during World War II. African American soldier wearing a Santa Claus mask with the complexion of a white Santa Claus (2:45). Needy children are hosted by U.S. military personnel at the camp. Soldier assisted by African American soldiers distributed gifts to a crowd of white and black impoverished children (3:05). Footage of group photo with soldiers and children (3:17). White women and light complexioned African American woman brushing and styling their hair (4:00). Narrator comments on how women take time to prepare their hair; dated gendered undertone (4:10). Crowd outside of Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama (4:30). African American marching band on the football field (4:35). Players warming up on the field (4:45). Tennessee plays against Tuskegee; game kickoff (5:05). Footage of game between Tuskegee Institute and Tennessee (5:40). Bishop Greg tours the Great Lakes Naval Training Base. Bishop Greg is accompanied by commissioned African American naval officer as they observe a sailor preparing soup for the galley (5:55). Bishop Greg exams the food preparation to ensure sailors receive high quality meals (6:05). Bishop Greg meets and greets African American sailors (6:35). Integrated marching soldiers pass in review for the Bishop. The Bishop observes marching service members with white and black commissioned officers (6:45). Narrator comments on the prominence of African Americans contribution to the war effort (6:55). Narrator and Bishop salute service members (7:05). Billy Eckstine was a jazz and pop singer and a bandleader during the swing era. Earl Hines, was a jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano.

[Music] all american news brings you our people's contribution to america and freedom ca scott is not only editor and general manager of the atlanta daily world only negro daily newspaper but he also heads the scott syndicate comprising 18 weeklies and two semi-weekly with mrs scott and daughters porsche and jocelyn lenoi english of louisville kentucky received a 100 award a suggestion he made to his employers at the quartermaster depot won him the prize and saved thousands of [Music] you father manholes on your 20th anniversary thanks chef suppose you tell the folks something about your sensational career that would be a pleasure i started out as a pianist and now after being in show business as long as i have i have been instrumental in many stars coming to what we might say the stage and the screen such as herbie jeffries who is now in california also philly franklin who was with perkins porgy and bess and uh several others i'm sure that you had the pleasure of listening to as far as records is concerned like madeleine greene four varieties and the grand fellow who needs no introduction billyx time i'll say he doesn't need an introduction that's very fine earl and i see on the other side your company has prepared a little treat for you so suppose we step over there that's fine a cake marks the 20th anniversary of earl hines in the show world as hosts of friends wish the great artist and star maker many more successful years [Music] today is children's day at the uso club near camp shanks at orangeburg new york one thousand children many of them needy little ones are guests of honor of the gi joe one of the soldiers plays santa and there's a gift for every youngster the uso is good to the gis and now the soldiers reciprocate [Music] the war has complicated a lot of things so milady is timely with her hairstyles did you ever see anything more involved than the corsairs of these two lovelies girls as pretty as these shouldn't have to worry about how they fashion their tresses but obviously they want to be right in style so what so this a pretty girl is like a melody must have been written about these lassies so if your girl is late for a date you'll know she's trying a new hairdo rockwood field birmingham alabama known as the balkan bowl a mammoth crowd witnessed the battle tuskegee has a record of only three losses out of 12 games this year and tennessee two losses and a tie the players warm up tennessee goes into the parade with the title of midwest conference champs tuskegee is famous for its tea formation and defensive strength the kickoff three members of each team were picked for the 1944 all-american negro 11. bass tuskegee halfback gains three yards he's an all-american that's tabor of tennessee trapped on a pass and he gains two yards tabor's pass is intercepted by bass quarterback tabor is another all-american gilmore tennessee game six yards a gray day but a bright crowd faster's over for a touchdown final score shows the odds on favorites beaten by 13 to nothing on his tour of inspection of great lakes naval training base bishop greg visits the kitchen the church dignitary is interested in the chow our boys are getting he and the other guests find the ham steaks very tasty indeed nobody can say our boys aren't well fed with the nation's very best apples and other fresh fruit graced the menu bishop greg brought good cheer to our boys on the firing lines in just about every theater of war during his recent journey now the gobs pass in review for the noted church leader and humanitarian he is seen with great lakes officers the bishop is much impressed with the splendid showing made by the men of his race at this leading naval base as elsewhere in the war effort he is doing much to encourage our fighting men you
