north from Ketchikan south from Point Barrow west of Juneau Skagway and Eagle and east of app to Nome and Point Hope is Alaska the great plan [Music] there are 1,500 miles from Cape Fox to the Polar Sea from the Canadian border to the near islands it is 1/6 of the way around Earth Alaska is a promise a promise we must pursue up the inland passage past wrangle Sitka Angoon past tuna in Juneau northwest of Haines lies the clock wind alluvial fan a billion tons of 20% iron untouched Alaska promise [Music] less than 1% of the land has been adequately explored for minerals they're taking 30,000 barrels a day out of the Kenai we sold eight point seven five billion board feet of timber in the juneau unit [Music] they said it was the biggest timber sale ever made Alaska is a promise west of Yakutat C word from Cordova and Seldovia near kodiak lives the king crab they took a hundred and fifty nine million pounds a king in a year from the Gulf and Kodiak has 30 new packing plants Alaska is a promise well some men ask where's the promise we've had it for a hundred years the key to Alaska is the Alaskans they work together they work in private enterprise and at all levels of government to unlock this promise they are young with progressive ideas their customs and mores encourage the inventive welcome risk invite initiative and hard work they are productive well educated healthy imaginative daring adventuresome what Alaskan is afraid of hardship risk and work when they want something they go after it Alaska is a promise and the key the Alaskans we've got soil some say that's too thin over rock or coarse fragments too steep too cold or too wet for economical production well in the Matanuska Valley we grew a six million dollar crop we're gonna develop the Tanana Valley in the Kenai for truck crops and around Homer it's grassland farming from Kodiak out the chain Oona Mack boom nak Adak Amchitka we've got beef and sheep Alaska is a promise within the north and south Tongass the trip catch national forests and the coastal forests are 16 and 1/2 million acres of timber this will sustain an annual cut of 1800 million board feet in the Tongass alone there are 92 billion board feet of commercially operable forest [Music] it rains it rains from sixty inches a year 200 in south-central Alaska and even to 150 inches a year in the extreme southeast and the timber stand is beautiful its Sitka spruce Western hemlock Alaskan red and Alaska cedar these forests these public parks are managed under the multiple use principle for timber water wildlife and Recreation values in the Tongass you can have your pick of a hundred forest service cabins for $2 a day 125 million acres of forestland in the Alaskan interior are on public domain land the stand its quaking aspen and white birch and Tamarack cottonwood white and black spruce Alaska is a promise and Alaska is Water and Power in the interior its power down the Yukon power down the porcupine the Tanana down the tributaries and branches of the Koya cook raw power down the Kuskokwim to the Bering Sea down the copper and the Cecilia to the Gulf of Alaska Alaska is power a potential of almost unlimited power for hydroelectric development we've catalogued 19 million kilowatts so far and in the Yukon a dam at rampid Canyon would create a lake ten percent larger than Lake Erie with more than 40 times the storage of Lake Mead behind Hoover Dam in Alaska a man can fish the salmon a 42 million dollar virus [Music] Alaska is the land of the bear the grizzly the black Kodiak and polar [Music] [Music] moose grazed the valleys of the Interior and there are elk and caribou and deer near the Gulf Coast doll sheep the only white mountain sheep in the world are found in the interior and on the canine Peninsula [Music] lambs are born in the crevices and deep fissures and in June they come out on the mountain a priceless national resource the wilderness and wildlife of Alaska travel Alaska from Fairbanks North for 550 miles to Point Barrow there are no roads from Fairbanks West for 550 miles to Cape Prince of Wales and from Homer West to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula there are no roads in Alaska everybody flies in the interior there's a rail and highway system 500 miles long and someday they say it'll go clear to Nome [Music] take the Marine Highway up from Prince Rupert Ketchikan wrangle Petersburg to Sitka Juneau and Haines [Music] [Music] the Aleut the Indian and the Eskimo share with all citizens in this creative partnership that is Alaska's promise [Music] Alaska is a promise and the fulfillment rests with the people the Alaskans and their great land [Music]
