Description: The film opens with a discussion of the function of a brake in changing energy into heat. Animation illustrates the problem of translating 36,000 pounds, the weight of an airplane, traveling at a landing speed of 90 miles per hour into an energy of 10,000,000 foot pounds which must be changed to heat through the braking system. The film closes with a discussion of the two basic systems of hydraulic brakes, the integral or power-operated brakes used on large planes, and the manually operated hydraulic brakes for small planes.
