AIR FORCE NOW: BROTHERS IN BLUE

[Music] since 1949 the United States Air Force and the Royal Air Force have worked together under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization the u.s. Air Bases in England are in fact Royal Air Force stations leased to the United States with American and British personnel stationed at each RAF upper Heyford is one of these bases where the two countries work side by side base commander Squadron Leader Brian Swain on it a daily basis aircraft from all the NATO countries land here at upper hayford and are serviced by USAF airmen who have the expertise experience and the technical manuals necessary to service those aircraft throughout NATO we have a system called cross servicing that means that any aircraft of any NATO country can go into each other's base and base one of the necessary poor and the necessary skills to service that aircraft and quite often it over hatred we have Dutch German Royal Air Force aircraft and aircraft from all the NATO nations here at our a topper - we have the f-111 aircraft which on a typical mission short we have to take off comes directly under the control of Royal Air Force controllers and there the aircraft will go off on sortie over Wales until it comes to one of the ranges which are controlled again by Royal Air Force controllers who direct and control the aircraft in times of tension war or exercise the outer defences of the base from attacking aircraft are looked after by 19 squadron of the Royal Air Force regiment [Music] the rapier missile units of the 19th squadron are funded by the United States Air Force designed and operated by the British the rapier missile is deadly and offers a virtually impenetrable defense for American air bases in the United Kingdom [Music] Rai Papa hatred is the the nucleus really for a number of smaller bases but perhaps the most important of these is the Communications Squadron at RAF Croton we have 23 Americans eight RAF and I'm the superintendent and supervise all of them I believe that the importance of cooperation between services is of paramount importance to NATO and to this successful NATO at this site in particular the RAF do a five-year tour the Americans only do a two-year tour this means that the RAF provides continuity of expertise is needed to allow us to have maximum availability on the circuit American British get along well on a monthly basis we have the pub lounge down there have a meal and play dogs everybody knows why we're here is we want to take a bite Graham here since he's been with us for three years on well grandma gets a hold good things must come to an end and after the three years you've been with out there at terminal we just can't say enough about the kind of hard work and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization isn't just a set of words on a bit of paper because each day the Royal Air Force and the United States Air Force in Europe not only played together but they work together in the air and on the ground this cooperation is on a day to day basis is perhaps not spectacular but it is superb [Music] [Applause] [Music] glass we're only going to the grocery store I'm a very safe driver I've never even had a ticket so you don't have to worry about me but that's enough all right seatbelts are a waste of time [Music] this camera crew and I are at the Pasadena Playhouse where I would like to talk to you as Brooke Shields the person about the USO entertaining an audience is hard work yet it is our job to provide entertainment and escape for the viewing audience occasionally we need to be reminded that those are merely actors and actresses on the stage and screen creating roles there are real people like you and I they work long hard hours they have trouble balancing their checkbooks and often they feel out of place too Hollywood like this theatrical set represents fantasy rather than reality what appears often onstage is very different from what exists backstage on stage the USO is glamorous but the USO backstage is an organization with a slightly different function and purpose the USO story began in 1941 from the teeming jungles of the South Pacific to the scorching deserts of North Africa the USO was there providing a reminder of home a smile a hot cup of coffee and an occasional belly laugh no please did I get Anya celebrity volunteers performed side-by-side with our men and often dangerously close to the front lines the stage took on a new meaning it could be the back end of a truck an open field or the hood of a car it didn't matter if you were a big star or not what mattered were the precious moments of relief from the tensions and horrors are more [Music] if any one person is synonymous with the USO its Bob Hope no other entertainer has given more of himself to the USM [Applause] nice some Park the moon the moon some bench come then some grass some dude I don't Bob Hope once said they thanked us and asked us for our autographs it was silly we should have asked them for theirs when it was finally over the piece was short-lived with our soldiers sailors and airmen fighting to keep Korea free the USO volunteers were once more alongside when peace returned in 1953 the USO continued to entertain Airmen at remote duty locations around the world [Music] but our involvement in Vietnam USO stages again appeared in remote jungle locations [Music] the USO has always tried to provide an outlet for entertainment to service people around the world most of you are quite familiar with the celebrity image of the USL the core of the USO today is a multi-faceted human service program serving the special needs of transient military personnel and their families whether it's airport centers fleet operations community orientation recreation programs or celebrity entertainment the USO is there and I just happen to be one of them people that know have very important you are and it's a privilege for me to come and sang for you and it's nothing much but it's just about all I can do and I want all of you to know that anytime you need me - coming soon oh yeah please hey have you heard of the USO yes USO is having
