no come on my [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Bo this is Air Force [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] now how's super hi I'm captain Kathy L and that was me in the pool after my first solo flight in the t37 I'm now flying the t38 toal I'm one of the first 10 women to fly this aircraft as a student in undergraduate pilot training during World War II the United States trained hundreds of women to become the aircore first female Pilots the Wasps as they were known flew thousands of non-combat hours during the war and contributed greatly to the final Victory last year in a test program the Air Force again opened flying training to women at mayther Air Force Base California Six Women officers are now enrolled as student Navigators and are scheduled to graduate in October 1977 and at Williams Air Force Base Arizona 20 women were enrolled in two undergraduate pilot training classes the second class has just started the first stage of training in the t37 while the first class has progressed to the more advanced t38 as commander of the t38 Squadron here at Willie I have viewed firsthand the fine job that the women are doing in the upt program they are completely integrated in the program with their training schedule being exactly the same as the men they expect to be treated and are treated the same as any other students in an 11mon training program many students encounter problems and the women are no exception however they're dealing with these problems and progressing satisfactorily in fact of the 10 women who started in the first class all are still in the program they're meeting the same course training standards as the men and I think this shows they can hold their own in the program [Music] most of the pressure that that I feel and and most of the other girls feel is is the pressure that we impose upon ourselves to do real well um it's like starting out in any field you can't just be good you've got to do better you've got to be better than good and I think this is the pressure that a lot of us have imposed on ourselves is to try to to do as good as we can that sir did you get the take off time yeah 12:25 to 1331 looks good I'll catch up with you later I just came down from Capon Engles contact flight although under the stress of an evaluation she flew a very good Mission she has a lot of confidence in her abilities and overall made very few mistakes been a check poil for more than one year and consider this one of the best flights I've seen so far IP is a really special person the IP's I flown with I think the world of and I'm really excited about who I'm flying with and that's important you need to have that that Rapport you got to like the IP the turn of the U the Shondell going out of the bottom of the area of course you know you don't want to do it initially when the women came over to the squad and there was a lot of anticipation as far as how they were going to do how things were going to change in the squatter there's no change at all really nobody really noticed any big problems at all the women are are doing fine they encounter the same kind of problems that many if not all the males encounter while going through the program and uh I for one as well as a lot of other IPS have not had to change their techniques at all or or program themselves in any different way just because they're flying with women this program teaches you budgeting of time like I know I try to do all my academic homework on the weekends and just try to get the full week's worth of of work and problems done on the weekend you have to study at night but usually for the next activity whether it's an instrument ride or a contact Mission you mentally prepare for the flight the first women have done well in the program up to this point but they are now approaching the most demanding portion of our flying training program formation they have only had to deal with the problems associated with their own aircraft but now they must include in their thought process the problems involved in flying with as many as three additional aircraft based on their past performance I think they will also handle this portion of the training well [Music] leaders grams the metric system what is it it's not just a school exercise of changing ounces to grams or liters it's something that all of us in the Air Force will become a lot more familiar with in years to come the change to the metric system or the International System of Units as it's officially known is happening already some of the packages in the stores are already showing their sizes in metric terms television weather forecasts give the temperature in both our old friend the Fahrenheit scale and in something called Celsius and for foreign car owners no longer have to look all over town to find a set of metric wrenches to work on their pride and joy some 1977 cars already have their speedometers marked in both systems and all cars will have the duo markings by 1982 frankly part of the reason is that the United States is a minority in a world that uses the metric system last year only brunai Burma Liberia yam and the United States have been holding out against metrics how is the change going to affect us in and out of the Air Force I was recently stationed in Europe I found myself involved in several NATO countries exercises working with different mechanics from these countries as time went on we became involved in the metric system at first I found it somewhat difficult to understand but as time went on I learned to understand exactly what the metric system was about and eventually we worked out a common level of understanding between us if you've had an overseas tour recently you probably became accustomed to converting kilometers to miles and you know that a little more than a kilometer and a half is what we know is a mile but there will come a time when those of you in the motor pool may have to have both kinds of tools and both kinds of Parts but don't look for a sudden complete change over to metric next week or next year we aren't going to suddenly make all of our measurements in metric the parts for our present planes and missiles won't change according to Air Force planners new systems will be designed in metric present planes and missiles and cars and trucks will stay the way they were and we're told most football and baseball fields will also stay in feet and yards in years to come we will be joining the rest of the world in a measurement system that is logical easy and consistent hi I'm George Wilson we've all the basic through the advanced procedures and Maneuvers each of us no matter what our Air Force specialty is directly or indirectly involved with computers every day they are valuable tools which enable us to perform our jobs faster easier and more accurately [Music] [Applause] [Music] 1947 marked the birth of both the United States Air Force and the world's first electronic digital computer the Air Force use of computers grew as computers did from the massive limited capacity early machines through the second generation transistorized computers to today's integrated circuit computers which serve as the central nervous system for our modern Air Force because computers are so important in the air force today every Cadet at the Air Force Academy takes a course in computer science so that he can learn how the computer works and how to effectively use it basically there are three kinds of computers large computer systems or Maxi computers are used in places like the finance Center or MTC where we have to process large amounts of information or in places where we need to support lots of people doing a variety of different jobs each year the centralized military pay facility at the accounting and finance center in Denver pays 6 and2 billion to 580,000 active duty personnel as well as retired and Reserve pay jumps inquiries please jumps inquiries start nby delute Minnesota the center receives 40,000 telephone requests a month for routine pay information and can furnish the answers immediately in most cases as the circuit search their electronic memories in thousands of a second okay base pay is 84990 theq is $18.30 he's drawn ProPay at $150 a month our paychecks arrive on time and accurately thanks to computers and the skilled experts who operate them many computers such as this are much smaller and cheaper they are used to support combat operations whether that be aboard an aircraft or in a combat Operation Center such as NORAD among the most sophisticated computer systems ever developed is norad's Cheyenne Mountain Complex which must provide ballistic missile and bomber early warning information for the defense of our continent the satellite surveillance system 23,000 m in space and radar sensors on the ground constantly feed information to the complex where computers keep track of all man-made objects in space and potential new threats the computer's ability to accept process and furnish information to norad's evaluators help ensure that our defense system has maximum warning of enemy attack command control and management need information and modern defense can't rely on maps charts and pins computer furnished graphs readouts and video displays give commanders instantaneous access to virtually any aspect of any problem sack is the largest user of computers in the Air Force its vital worldwide mission is accomplished effectively and at the most economical cost in people time and dollars through the use of computers programmed to meet sack's specific needs this is probably the computer of the future it's a microprocessor these processors are very inexpensive and require very limited space and yet they perform the same functions that are performed by the larger computers at the the Air Force avionics laboratory computers help engineers in the research development testing and evaluation of avionics for tomorrow's Air Force here new ideas and Concepts in navigation communication electronic warfare surveillance reconnaissance and weapon delivery are limited only by the imagination of man and computers allow men New Freedom in the exploration of the frontiers of Technology whether it be a small handheld calculator like this one or a large scale computer system like the one behind me computers affect the lives of everyone in the Air Force in the way we do our job [Music] I
