Explains that Head Start policy calls for a teacher, a paid aide and one or more volunteers for each preschool group of about 15 children. Points out that the aides generally come from the same low-income population as the children and must be trained both on the job and in in-service programs. Shows that aides who know the community and its families facilitate communication in both directions between community and school.
