In 1560, a large Spanish expedition searching for the mythical lost city of El Dorado, dispatched a small advance party to explore a tributary of the Amazon. They never returned. Herzog has extrapolated this obscure historical incident to present a horrifying chronicle of imperialism gone awry. This aberration is personified by one of the commanders, Don Lope de Aguirre, the self-proclaimed wrath of God, a megalomaniac who dreams of usurping an entire continent.
