are usually dangerous and scary situations they happen without warning and they often cause harm emergencies can happen to me you or to someone we know now my research has also shown that you can do more to help yourself or someone else in an emergency if you are prepared or have it planned if an emergency happens try to remain calm very calm if you feel confused take a moment to organize your thoughts and then call for help around my laboratory i try to be prepared for all emergencies i have a fire extinguisher in case a fire should start i have a first aid kit in case i should get a cut or a scrape i have a telephone in case someone should try to break in while i'm here and i can call the police and if some sneaky thief should try to creep in here when i'm not around well i have invented a foolproof deep catching net all it takes is to press this button to set the net now if someone walks through my laboratory it will activate the device i'm pretty clever no oh yes well it's time to check on another experiment [Applause] i feel talking to you oh i'll take a moment to calm down oh i know i'll call for help [Applause] [Music] like the professor has gotten himself into a jam again but if i know the professor it's probably a difficult situation and not a real emergency still i better go check it out you see each situation must be dealt with in its own special way your actions and decisions will change depending on where you are who can help and just exactly what the situation is coming professor what do i do if i see somebody in trouble in the water if you do see somebody who is in the water and is in danger find the nearest lifeguard or an adult we will help them out of the water what would i do if i saw someone breaking the law if you see a crime in progress call 9-1-1 on your operator as quickly as you can be sure to stay on the line we would like to know where the crime is happening and a description of what is happening if i see an accident what should i do if you see an accident call 911 so [Music] well well well what was that that was a siren sound scary well of course it's scary someone could be hurt or in trouble it could be an emergency oh no emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time i'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies a fire in the fireplace fire in the furnace are in their proper places no of course they will not burn us but if by chance of fire starts where it's not meant to be then what you got my friend it is an emergency emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time i'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies now if somebody is late and it's causing them to worry and they want to get a move on so they move on in a hurry they don't wait for the light they just race across the street if a driver doesn't see them and suddenly they meet emergency call for quick action emergency happening a fraction of time i'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies emergencies don't have to just be accidents or fires they can also be rubble in the water or elaborate but no matter what they always require quick action emergencies call a quick action an emergency happen in a fraction of time now what would you do if somehow you wait somewhere emergency involved a friend or are you [Music] this is professor you be smart speaking to you from my research center where i have been studying emergencies i have determined that emergencies are usually dangerous and scary situations they happen without warning and they often cause harm emergencies can happen to me to you or to someone we know now my research has also shown that you can do more to help yourself or someone else in an emergency if you are prepared or have a plan if an emergency happens try to remain calm very calm if you feel confused take a moment to organize your thoughts and then call for help around my laboratory i try to be prepared for all emergencies i have a fire extinguisher in case a fire should start i have a first aid kit in case i should get a cut or a scrape i have a telephone in case someone should try to break in while i'm here and i can call the police and if some sneaky thief should try to creep in here when i'm not around well i have invented a foolproof deep catching net all it takes is to press this button to set the net now if someone walks through my laboratory it will activate the device i'm pretty clever no oh yeah well it's time to check on another experiment [Applause] i'll take a moment to calm down oh i know i'll call for help [Applause] [Music] sounds like the professor has gotten himself into a jam again but if i know the professor it's probably a difficult situation and not a real emergency still i better go check it out you see each situation must be dealt with in its own special way your actions and decisions will change depending on where you are who can help and just exactly what the situation is coming professor [Music] what do i do if i see somebody in trouble in the water if you do see somebody who is in the water and is in danger find the nearest lifeguard or an adult we will help them out of the water what would i do if i saw someone breaking the law if you see a crime in progress call operator as quickly as you can be sure to stay on the line we would like to know where the crime is happening and a description of what is happening if i see an accident what should i do if you see an accident call 911 or your operator and stay on the phone tell them the location of the accident the type of accident and your name and will be there very quickly what would i do if i saw a house on fire if you see a fire call 911 or your local operator give them the location of the fire stay on the telephone because i want to ask you some questions i want to know your name your address and what is on fire remember don't go near the fire i got the professor out of his thief catching net he's fine and back at work now and i was right it was not an emergency but if he had been seriously hurt with a broken arm or leg then i would have called an ambulance or taken him to the hospital emergency room [Music] [Music] have you ever wondered why an ambulance goes racing down the street so fast with his lights and sirens on have you ever wondered if he's going to some kind of emergency the ambulance is like an emergency room on wheels inside we carry all kinds of equipment for all kinds of problems which will help you in your emergency if you have an emergency dial 911 or the operator in the back of the ambulance we have things to help you if you're burned if you're in a car accident if you swallow poisons if you're feeling sick or ill don't be surprised if a fire truck comes to your emergency where you may be sick if you've fallen off a swing set and broken a bone or not feeling well at home they are trained in first aid as well as the paramedics and can help you in your emergency situations suppose you're on the playground and broke your arm someone would dial 911 the air splint immobilizes the fracture it's similar to a temporary cast you slide it on a person's arm and you inflate it with your mouth with air then next you squeeze the fingers make sure the cast isn't too tight that it cuts off the circulation and then you transport to the hospital slim slam where are you slim i'm right here pillow what's the matter oh i'm so glad to see you i was lonely and frightened i thought i heard some strange noises outside like someone trying to break in where were you i was helping professor smart well i'm glad you're back i feel better now i guess i was just being silly i was waiting here all alone by yourself on your own when i started to feel scared i'm not sure why the very next minute i started to cry our home sweet home didn't seem the same it got all dark and strange i called and called and called your name it made me scared to feel the change i'm sorry for your pain dear friend i am really sorry for your fear let me hold you nice and close relax calm down i am here i understand your feelings cause i felt the same way too [Music] did you really yes i did what happened swim to you well i remember when i was younger i came home to an empty house uh-huh my parents had gone out visiting and they left me a key and something to eat good well i came in turned on the lights in the radio and made a sandwich and started eating and then i heard some strange noises oh the windows and the doors were locked but i was getting nervous my imagination was getting the better of me i know what you mean i know it may sound silly but i got into bed and pulled the covers over my head that doesn't sound silly and then the phone rang who was it it was grandma she was calling to find out how i was doing good i told her about the strange noises she said not to worry was the wind blowing the trees against the house then she gave me her number and told me to call her back i got scared again boy i felt much better after that you know pillow everybody needs someone on whom they can depend a person they can talk with like a neighbor family or a friend you're my friend i'm your friend [Music] troopers here's general health commander of the international health brigade troopers when emergencies happen it's important to know what to do and so i want you to make my emergency action plan a habit there are three main points number one stay calm when an emergency happens yes sir stay calm number two collect the facts what where when and who yes sir the facts number three call for help yes sir call for help there are three telephone numbers you ought to have handy your home number the number of a relative or friend and the number of the police either nine one one or zero per operator remember troops be prepared dismissed that was good advice from the general keeping a cool head and knowing whom to call for help are good ways to face an emergency and if you ever do have to call for help be sure you know your own address the name of your street and the number of your house or apartment emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time i'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies [Music] what where when and who [Music] oh emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction but now you know just what to do if somewhere somehow some way someday emergencies happen to a friend or [Music] hello everybody happy halloween two days early i can't think of anything more frightening than watching a slim goody body film a man who's organs were outside of his body or he didn't have any skin i'm not sure what the deal is but really really truly horrifying life i was uh honored to see slim now let me let you see what i look like what's going on hey skip alzheimer a little early but uh yeah so uh i was very honored to see some good buddy live uh in raleigh at a uh uh it was a big auditorium filled with kids during the day and myself and some friends were the only adults there but it was pretty awesome he was uh my hair's nuts uh he was uh doing uh he did two shows one about dinosaurs and health and the other both of them were about health and diet and exercise you know trying to combat childhood obesity but he was having all sorts of problems with the sound so you could tell he was really irritated he kept looking at his like wireless mic and tapping it and looking at some guy really mean and you know trying to keep up so it was uh it was bittersweet but uh afterwards i got a chance to get a photo with him um which was really great he's uh really quite something uh so some good money and i i did not have this on film so i actually when it came up on ebay i was very excited to go and find it uh and purchase it um so i might have to go buy some more some good buddies because there's always a good song and dance um and some zaniness i think this is from his tv show that he had i originally saw him on of course on captain kangaroo um i was too old for captain kangaroo but it was completely freaked out by this man that was uh you can see all his organs so yeah um so we're almost there i'm gonna swap reels um and then i'll do a proper intro i'm going back to the for those of you that have been following for a while i'm going back to the old webcam because the other one is just fritzy and this one's not great so if anybody has a good recommendation for a webcam that works on windows please feel free to pass it on to me so um i can buy one the logic tech one i bought was a piece of garbage it's odd what just happened there we go okay now we're now we're cooking for those of you who uh don't know i'm skipped alzheimer the av geek and i am presenting you a night two hour-ish two hours-ish of uh millimeter educational films live uh broadcast via um this uh telecini that i have in the back that actually transfers film to video live and we're broadcasting it via facebook and youtube and so tonight's theme is because halloween's two days away it's a very 16 millimeter halloween so i've pulled out a couple of films about halloween a couple of films about witches ghosts etc it's interesting how many educational films actually use uh ghosts and supernatural things to kind of get their point across so we'll see some of these examples this next one is one of my favorite features of which and teaches you about good hygiene kinda um but i kind of wanted to say that uh tonight's show is a tribute to a very dear friend of mine who passed away stephen parr steven ran oddball film and video in san francisco and had maybe twice the number of films that i had had an insane amount of films and he passed away last week he was really sweet guy he loved i did screenings with him over the years and i did screenings at his space and we hosted him here in raleigh for a couple of things and he was this very kind gracious person had amazing stories was incredibly irreverent like uh was routinely uh sending emails that had images that would not be safe for work um he uh was a great force for people uh in the archival community he was very open and and gracious and welcoming and it certainly helped me kind of come into this world um and dude could talk he would talk and talk and talk and talk and talk uh both on a good way in a bad way but you know i loved him for that um and now i'm not gonna hear his voice so um i'm sad but i want to celebrate his life in some ways so in the future hopefully we'll do a screening or we'll do something that kind of highlights the films that he loved to show including the uh navy enema film that which he just just loved showing all the time it was really good but man dude it was like i don't care if you have 60 000 films because you keep showing that one over and over and over again so um like i said tonight is 16 millimeter films about halloween ghosts goblins monsters etc so we're going to start off with our first film which is um dirt which cleans up glorious film uh [Music] [Music] [Music] so destiny and turn it in reverse light will be day and day will be night right will be wrong and wrong will be right [Music] the spotless and the clean i'll make them change before your site [Music] all right let's go you were there pig's so dirty i don't see why i got to be the one to feed you million things i could do i'd rather be doing clean up your mess [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] 29. dirty i am and dirty you'll be and then you'll see [Music] aah i saw what you did [Music] no one has ever seen me before you didn't have to do what you just did i i never wanted to be different and dirty and a dirty old witch i never wanted to be maybe maybe you could help me would you help me please please help me if that's all you wanted sure [Music] oh no are you sure yes i'm sure i think i think it will hurt no um i do it all the time does your mother say oh i hate it we've got to clean your fingernails with this brush [Music] this is how you clean your hands [Music] now your feet this is how you do your ear now let's do your mouth we have to do all these things to make it good and clean take a look in the mirror and you please is this really me sure it takes one back to make it look like this [Music] [Music] hey [Music] okay so some people can hear me on facebook and some people can't and some people can hear me on youtube and some people can and some people this is what happens when you straddle like 95 years of technology like you have your feet back in the early film days and then you try to use digitizing and internet streaming equipment and then facebook and youtube are always sitting there futzing with stuff so i do hear myself lightly in the background on one of my test machines so i'm sorry if you can't hear me but if you can't hear me you don't know what i'm saying anyways so oh well that doesn't really work does it um for those of you that didn't hear me uh tonight's show is halloween films um or films about witches uh monsters ghosts etc etc um and also this film goes out to stephen parr who was a beloved uh fellow film collector archivist stock footage guy um goofy guy fun guy uh sometimes amazingly frustrating sometimes to work with but ultimately a great heart um he came to the bastard film encounter in april in raleigh and was really quite uh quite something um showed some amazingly tedious and also pretty uh great stuff so steven i'm gonna miss you you he passed away last week okay so moving ahead here's uh a film about a monster educational films sometimes use monsters or supernatural beans to try to get their point across the last one we saw was maybe about hygiene but it goes so far and so weird um i really love showing that film to adults dirt witch cleans up because it is just so odd and baffling it has a great soundtrack this next film is called gruesome gray monster [Music] kathy loved colors but one day who are you i'm the great gruesome gray monster and i've come to take all the colors from the world where are you taking my colors back to my gruesome gray castle i'm going to leave the whole world of gorgeous grey no a gruesome grimy grey kathy was so sad to lose her colors but oddly enough nobody else noticed everyone was so used to drab gray buildings gray smoggy skies and hard gray playground pavements if i had only one color in the whole world i wouldn't be so lonely red why you're red really really red but i thought the gruesome gray monster had all the colors in his gruesome gray castle all the colors but me i got out but how well i waited until the gruesome gray monster was sound asleep then i snuck up behind him and i painted his shoes red oh my my shoes my great gruesome gray shoes are red help so i guess you could say i got kicked out of the castle well i'm sure glad you did everyone else has forgotten me nobody sees the rich racy red of a stop sign or the flashy snappy red of a fire engine and the people who eat an apple a day and don't even care if it's red nobody cares about me but i care about you red and a lot of people do we've got to go to the great gruesome gray castle and get back all the colors then people will see how much they missed you [Music] red red i i see red help we've come to get the rest of the colors you grew some grimy grungy gray monster no but the world is so grim mr grizzly uh i mean world has never been happier but or gray but if you won't let the colors out then i'm coming back here to be with them oh and this time i'll not only paint your shoes red i'll paint your big gray gruesome grungy grimy nose red wait a minute maybe we can make a deal what kind of a deal well i'll give you one color if you can name me ten things that color was before the world turned gray that's easy she thinks it's easy but nobody remembers what the colors were since the world turned gray i pick the color blue one two three four five six seven eight nine ten well the blue was an easy color why don't you pick a hard color like yellow all right yellow one two three four five six seven eight nine ten she did it i got two colors back two colors but you you tricked me but it's only two colors i still have all the rest and you're not going to get them don't be sad kathy remember counting me you now have three colors but i wanted all the colors back look here comes blue the sky it's blue again and here's yellow yellow watch out you're going to smash into the color blue look there's green where did he come from when you mix yellow and blue together you get green i see green is made from yellow and blue now i have another color watch out yellow you're gonna smash into red yellow and red made orange kathy decided to place her colors in a circle first she put red at the top then she placed blue and yellow and because yellow and blue make green i'll put green in between and since yellow and red make orange i'll put orange here but oh no there's a hole here what do red and blue make purple is made from red and blue but i wonder what would happen if i mixed all my colors together why i'd get all the colors make the great gruesome gray monster but that means you're a color too of course i'm a color that's why i took all the other colors from the world nobody thought i was a color i wanted to show them don't be sad mr monster you're not a gruesome gray you're a gorgeous gray why just think of all the lovely gray things in the world why you belong in the very middle of my circle since all the colors make grey do then you think i'm really a nice color of course but you better promise me mr gray monster that you won't ever take all the colors away from the world again and if i promise that then you let me be in the very center of your color circle sure okay i promise [Music] remember okay so after the showing uh here are instructions in the program guide one paint a picture of all the things in nature you can think of that are the primary colors close your eyes and imagine each one as another color what colors would you make them paint the things and give them their new colors two imagine that you are the only one who noticed when gruesome grey monster stole the colors write a story about how you got all the colors back three make secondary colors by mixing the primary colors then paint a picture using only secondary colors so as you know the objectives of this film were to visualize a world without color and conclude that color is a valuable part of their experience your experience identify three primary colors red yellow blue and secondary colors green yellow and orange so i'm reading the can here um perceive a following color relationship red yellow makes orange blue and red make purple yellow and blue make green understand how certain objects are identified by their color so there you go that's the learning experience that the gruesome grey monster is is to teach us [Music] thank you cornet films for that uh this was probably made i can't remember the copyright year it's probably 70s mid 70s that's my guess all right so i have this film it was not in my database but i was looking in the stacks in my archive and it said ghost dance so i don't know what this is if it's uh pornographic we're gonna take it off and not show it uh but otherwise uh yeah ghost dance this is a premiere like i haven't even seen it i kind of don't know where it came from actually it was back there so um maybe i got it in a batch of films or i don't know we'll see we're all going to explore this together so all right enjoy ghost dance on december 29 1890 chief bigfoot and 300 of his people were massacred by the united states army near wounded knee creek in south dakota most of those killed were followers of the ghost dance religion they believed magic of ceremonies and dances could bring back the old life when the bullets overtook bigfoot's band at wounded knee their dancing ended but the story of their journey and the dream they carried lives on with those who remember let us honor those who live and die for dreams [Music] in school i learned of heroic discoveries made by liars and crooks the courage of millions of sweet and true people was not commemorated let us then declare a holiday for ourselves and make a parade that begins with columbus's victims and continues even to our grandchildren who will be named in their honor because isn't it true that even the summer grass here in this land whispers those names and every creek has accepted the responsibility of singing those names and nothing can stop the wind from howling those names around the corners of the school why else would the birds sing so much sweeter here than in other lands here night long they invent new names christening themselves in the cold creek the dawn's sky expels their lunar voices crazy horse is dead parched buffalo bones moonlight weathering into dry corn gathered with a helpless vengeance a circle of lives danced until sunlight drunk on the music of dreams their ears death to anxious hooves and silent bugles their eyes blinded by the glinting sabers the reservation shook with the pounding of moccasins as though a great herd of bison had stampeded out of the earth into the plains snorting its freedom but all good medicine and magic could not soothe the heartache melt the sabers bullets bugles obliterate the final senseless suffering all the borrowed prayers and dreams could not preserve the vast dusted spaces this harmless faith nearly christian and linked with reluctance kept the hunger down and the tears inside yet weighed them down against flight conquered their legs gave birth to disbelief as if history had proved some fact of humanity where none existed upon the hill where the war cannons had churned their metal bowels to blast away the tipi village a beast more ghost than coyote in ghastly angles of desperation close to 300 fallen sioux were frozen a few dire women and children had run west along the blood-drenched draw for over two miles before the soldiers gunfire found them now black beads of awe struck eyes stared back in unblinking blankness the shroud of snow woven by the white giant's wife would cover the red world forever or so it seemed between torn lodges and over december fields troopers hunt survivors night freezes in sealed down by winter dark ice upon pain with daybreak a scattering buckshot blizzard northers over dry plains on the miniconju trail across the little creeks blinding flattened teepees the wounded knee slaughtered and spotted elk half risen head fallen to his right last chief of the free sew i stared at the ice box landscape of pine ridge and threw the faint mirrored ghost of my own reflection upon the winter pain some wino's coat frozen in the yard half under snow a rigid arm extended reaching for air in this ghost scene the dogs dragged home this replication of what we all have seen in the famous picture of 1890 by the hysterical nebraska historical society the mini konju chief bigfoot frozen solid one gnarled and bony arm extended into the chilled air of his cousin's land a simple why in his death grimace these white men hate all that is good and we don't know why as chief bigfoot's body was flung with the rest of his bloody flock into the common grave the relative's keen sun grief remembered his strong heart words which failed to save their world i will stand in peace till my last day comes now he has fallen into the war pit of history along with the 23 medals of honor awarded for wounded knee ernest a distinguished gallantry hamilton matthew h bravery in action hawthorne harry l distinguished conduct in battle with hostility it was my own baby whose cradleboard i held would have put her in my mouth like a snake if i could would have turned her into a bush or a rock if they'd been magic enough to work such changes not enough magic to stop the bullets not enough magic to stop the scientists not enough magic to stop the money now our ghosts dance a new dance pushing from their hearts a new song it's been 100 miles as the eagle flies an aging sign says sight of wounded knee three miles dust devils kick tumbleweeds against a barbed wire fence in a ditch a bullet-riddled sign says sight of wounded knee two miles in 73 a nation stood and declared we are tired of broken treaties now it will end it was sealed with blood and a shattered sign proclaims sight of wounding one aisle from the belfry of a gutted church one can see trenches that were and hear the echoes of many guns a long time ago wounded knee we will return to life we will stay in the sun long before the shadows are born there will be no distance between our words and the banished moon in all that grows while the winter reaps we will live again [Music] hey [Music] hmm [Music] wow 1990 that's that's late uh as far as 16 millimeter educational films go um so i am not 100 sure not 100 sure where i got that film i could do a little bit of due diligence it probably showed up i have no idea i really have to kind of figure that one out um the can says that it's from a library which i didn't get any films from so i'm not really el paso public library oh wait a minute maybe i do know okay yeah it was from uh i did get a bunch of stuff from a texas library um earlier in the year and so that's probably where that came from fascinating um you never know like titles will sometimes tell you uh and you know i could have looked it up but i figured we could watch it together for the first time and figure out what's going on so there's ghost dance um that's part of the fun is kind of discovering for the first time like what is that what is that supposed to be i don't know so we learned something together all right this next film if some of you recognize this cover some of you film enthusiasts uh so this was universal education and visual arts so universal of course universal films they realized there was a lot of money to be made in educational films so they created this film uh well so they bought a lot of stuff from other places like castle films and uh but also shot some of their own stuff uh this is an interesting series um i want you to kind of try to figure out why it's so weird why is it so weird um the title might well the title is halloween but there might be extra information in here which will tell you why it's weird but maybe i don't know maybe i'll try to skip past now yes this is part of the living language series and um i really love all the films in this series they're just so the pacing of them is so strange and glorious and there's a reason for it which i'll explain after the fact but maybe you'll have some ideas on uh why it is so strange so here's halloween so [Music] today is october 31st it is halloween the children are making halloween pictures one boy made a jack-o'-lantern mary says look at my owl the witch and the black cat are scary the teacher likes the pictures the children will have a halloween party they are putting on their costumes the children are playing pin the nose on the jack-o-lantern mary cannot see she put the nose on the jack-o-lantern's eye now it's harry's turn it is time for refreshments betty likes the apple cider the children have apple cider donuts and jelly apples halloween candy tastes good john likes jelly apples the best mary's mother baked some pumpkin pies mary is home from school paul will be a skeleton tonight tonight mary will wear her witch costume they will play trick or treat father is home father brought pumpkins for the children they will make a jack-o-lantern barry gets a knife and spoons paul gets a crayon mary takes the seeds out of the pumpkin mary draws the eyes and the nose now she draws a funny mouth father carves the eyes the nose and the funny mouth mother will bring a candle barry puts the candle in the jack-o-lantern it is almost evening the children are in their costumes can you see a witch and a skeleton one child has on a horse costume the children say trick or treat halloween is fun for children [Music] so [Music] okay so um excuse me um what was the deal with that film somebody asked on youtube like is that normal in the 50s did they just have like this weird narration um no so what's going on here is this film is made for children that are hearing impaired they are partially deaf and this film is trying to teach kids how to lip read among other things so you'll see those scenes where kids uh or adults or whoever they were uh mouthing you know like you know it would put up the line that says let's make a jack-o-lantern um and there's lots of films in this series uh and i have i have a couple uh there's one about a birthday party um the one i'm coveting that i saw was uh about a visit to a motel to a motor lodge where they talk about all the different things and i i feel like for somebody watching who's another film collector is the nelson's and did you guys bring it or was that something that stephen parr brought um because it was it was weird i mean even for this type of film it was very very strange uh because it didn't really i don't think it mentioned the bathroom it like kind of did a pan around the room and said here's the bed and here's a dresser and here's a closet and here's a television and air conditioner and heater and it you know goes right past the door that has the bathroom it's like don't you want kids to know where the bathroom was i mean you don't have to talk about specifically what's in the bathroom but you know at least mention it anyways halloween what's interesting is the title does not have an apostrophe in it like uh the subtitles i don't know is that interesting is punctuation interesting i don't know maybe we'll do a show about it all about punctuation i guarantee you that it's probably not very interesting [Music] let's see what we got here [Music] so many cells this one has a little bit of well you can see a little bit of mold on it that's not cool i'll try not to breathe while i show it it happens all right so hopefully this comes not water damage which is why the mold is there um we'll see appalachian and we'll see how it works this home is called haunted house you guys watch love watching me thread of um tell us any i almost feel like getting another camera and and like pointing it at the uh the threading process and do a cutaway that's just too much technology too much yeah it's not gonna work all right enjoy haunted house hello [Music] come on you two settle down timmy into bed come on sally are you afraid of ghosts i've never seen one why barry says he's not afraid of ghosts who's barry he's timmy's new friend he lives up the street what's all this business about ghosts you kids been telling ghost stories or something no it's that empty old house on the next street we'll go past it every day on our way to school what about it nothing someone wants to know who lives in it and barry said it was full of ghosts did he ever see any did you or timmy ever see any no i don't believe in ghosts well i guess that sells that bear is just making it up now how about getting some sleep [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] see there's no ghosts just an old empty house let's look around i don't like this place let's go home [Applause] you said you wanted to see the ghost dania come on let's look in that room over there there's just a bunch of old junk what was that i don't know ah it wasn't anything probably somebody outside let's go outside and play no i want to see what's upstairs [Applause] [Applause] there's somebody up there let's get out of here let's sneak up and see who it is wanna go home come on come on so nothing in here it's only the wind see this window's open now can we go home let's see what else is up here first [Music] look there's an old trunk in here let's look inside come on charlie you have to help too oh look [Music] so [Music] laughs [Music] listen it's only that old door [Music] [Music] there you are come on come let's all sit down and have tea you mustn't go until you had your team sit down sit down we're going to have a lovely party where our teacher sit on so they're all no isn't that silly [Music] for me now we can sit down [Music] oh dear i forgot to fill it after the last tea party she's got to get the tea how do you suppose she does that she keeps disappearing and coming back again she's one of your ghosts and now we're ready we can start our tea party go ahead there's lots for everybody oh bye [Music] i've had such a nice time today i really hate to go but why don't you stay awhile we could all play hide and seek oh that would be fun but i've stayed too long already will you come back tomorrow and we'll have another party perhaps if tomorrow you really believe we had a party today hey [Music] come on hey joe what was that just some kids playing upstairs i guess i scared them off what's this [Music] what are you doing in my house who said you could come in here away with you and you [Music] we must think of something very special for you [Laughter] [Laughter] you're the one aren't you you have to come and see for yourself now you believe in ghosts hey timmy hey timmy hey timmy hey timmy timmy hey wake up it's all right timmy wake up you were having a bad dream i was all by myself and a ghost was calling me up it's all right timmy take it easy you're in your own house in your own bed and you tied yourself up here look at the sheets [Music] [Applause] so that film was canadian i knew because it was more than lashford but uh the dad a lot of hoots boots um what do you guys think of that film i uh i loved it uh and i'll tell you why um [Music] adults cannot tolerate a film that doesn't have a straight narrative and the idea that there were three there's these different endings um don't jive with what adults like so i show it to them to torture them if i can help it all right so now is the time i'm gonna we're gonna watch another film and then i'm gonna have you pick a film to watch and we have two to choose from and they're longish probably 30 minutes 20 some minutes one is winter of the witch and the other is ghosts and ghoulies so winter of the witch and ghost and ghoulies so i want you to vote uh on which one you want to see so just write it in the comments winter of the witch ghost and ghoulies i'm not gonna tell you anything about what either film is you're on your own um so you have as much knowledge about it as i do as far as the titles go um it might not be a witch in them it might not make goose ghoulies it might be about germs it might be i don't know about income tax who knows you can't always go with the titles but i looked them up in the database and i was like okay that has the word witch in it and that has the word ghost in it so let's see what happens kind of an interesting way to go through your collection but in the meantime uh was that house really haunted i don't think it was i don't feel like it was i feel like it was just they thought it was haunted and it was just empty and i don't know felt let down so maybe um maybe this film will show you a haunted classroom maybe i just uh on friday showed ghostbusters and a science museum and we had to you know basically talk about supernatural stuff in a museum of science and they were not interested in about the science the paranormal sciences quote unquote so it was it was interesting to kind of show the film which was very entertaining but then also say like yeah not a lot of good science about paranormal activity out there um it doesn't hold up it's kind of sloppy so anyways so watch let's watch this film next it is called taking care of your school so [Music] [Music] [Music] say what are you kids doing here school's over all the other kids have gone home oh it's okay mr dylan our teacher's here she's just going down to the lounge for a little while she gave us permission to fix up the room for the halloween open house tonight well if you're sure it's all right with her we're sure mr dylan see you at the open house okay are all the lights on yeah what nothing it's just kind of dark in here tonight that's all you scared no what was that i don't know there it is again i don't like it sounds like it's coming from there somewhere let's go suzy i really don't like this i think that noise is coming from the speaker up here let's get out of here maybe someone's in the office trying to scare us over the loudspeaker or maybe it's just mr dillon playing a joke well it's not funny mr dylan is that you oh hi there susie bill i'm sorry if i startled you mr dylan that doesn't sound like you no i'm not mr dylan who are you then well you may not believe this but i'm your school building ah come on who are you really no kidding i'm your school building school buildings can't talk come on stop it now you're scaring us i'm not scared huh not much how can i prove it or shall i dim my lights [Music] or ring my bells or twirl my hands oh hey don't do that that's spooky oh sorry susie i didn't mean to scare you you know our names oh i know all you children i've known you two since you first came here in kindergarten house coming over sniffling no i'm not sick just a little sad why oh because i've been abused what does that mean oh i've been mistreated soiled and scratched and scarred injured who did that to you why you did susie and you too bill and your classmates oh no not me i never did anything to hurt you me either i wouldn't do anything to put you on purpose oh i know you didn't do it on purpose but like what what did we ever do to you well for instance look under that poster you're making ooh i got it on the desk sorry i'll try and clean it up and put something under my paper from now on you should be more careful you think so bill you just taped that poster on my chalkboard so pull the tape off that tickles now look carefully at the chalkboard oh yeah i see there's gooey stuff here from where the tape had been that's a scar i may have for months or even years oh hey there's crayon marks here i never know the seas before some thoughtless child did that to me without even thinking how it would make me feel or look gee we're sorry please don't cry that's a shame you know when we're making posters we ought to make one to tell the other kids not to do things to hurt our school that would be nice don't let ink from felt markers get on desktops that's it don't let ink from felt markers get on desktops don't put tape on chalkboards or walls don't make crayon marks on walls or chalkboards that's great hey susie come here set look somebody scratched and carved all over this desk that really hurts to me it's just like cuts or bruises that won't ever heal but i've got wounds all over me look at my door and my woodwork do you see those stab marks these little pinholes no they may look little to you but how would you like to have somebody stick thumbtacks in your arms or legs i see what you mean and it's so unnecessary i've got perfectly good bulletin boards that can be used for pinning up things with tacks i'm getting this down on the list don't carve or scratch on desks don't put thumbtacks indoors or woodwork and somebody pulled my molding loose and i even have holes in my plaster gosh how did that happen somebody accidentally banged into my wall with a chair that cracked the plaster and then some kids just picked at the crack with pencils and their fingernails until it made a hole oh i remember doing that but i didn't mean to hurt you oh of course you didn't but i was damaged just the same bless you thank you excuse me it's the chalk dust getting to me again chop dust yes look where somebody powdered my face with chalk from an eraser gee that was a mean thing to do it's even worse when they pound the erasers on my cork board and get the dust and all those little cracks that can't be cleaned up excuse me we never thought about that mr school oh you can call me by my first name elementary or lm for short um we want to help you what can we do that poster that bill's making is a big help if you and your friends would just follow those rules i'd really be happy is there anything else we can put on here l.a oh lots of things just think about what happens during the day at school if children would keep their hands off my walls or when they line up or walk down the hall it would help keep my paint bright and clean i'm very proud of my paint you know and it would help if kids would put their hands on the switch plates instead of the walls when they turn on lights it would keep my walls looking nice and save your custodian a lot of hard work when you lean on a wall it's important to stand on both feet if you rest one foot against my wall it gets me all dirty and scrapes off my paint oh my floors really take a beating on wet days kids should wipe their feet so they don't track in mud and dirt wet umbrellas should be put in a waste basket to drip so they don't cause puddles on the floor wearing shoes or boots with steel cleats on them can cause terrible damage to me and i hope that no one will ever deliberately make rubber marks on my floors with their heels of course crayons should be picked up before they get squashed and spills should be wiped up right away you could also remind everyone that if they chew gum on the way to school as soon as they get here they should get rid of it by wrapping it up and putting it in a wastebasket some of them actually drop it on my floors or stick it under my desks yuck how would you like to be covered with somebody's wet sticky old chewing gum [Music] oh and sometimes my lockers get so full that i get indigestion it's a real pain in my tummy when my lockers are stuffed with old lunches wet umbrellas and other junk like that some of my lockers have been hurt because kids have swung on the doors jerked on the coat hooks or taken out the screws from the hinges that's rough treatment i'd be much happier and healthier if you kids would just be more gentle with me if you hit my panic bars too hard or jerk on the doorknobs it can break me or loosen my screws and i shudder every time someone kicks a door open instead of opening it properly my restrooms are awfully sensitive my fixtures can crack if anyone climbs or swings on them and my tiles break and scratch easily and my drains get all stopped up if you kids drop paper towels in the basins instead of putting them in waste baskets as you should even when you're playing outside you sometimes hurt me without realizing it children should play on the playground not in my trees and shrubs they're easily damaged it's very important to be careful where you throw things a rock or a ball can break one of my windows so it's best not to ever throw anything towards your school building boy have we got a list keep hands and feet off walls wipe your feet at the door on wet days don't wear metal cleats inside don't make heel marks on the floor pick up crayons and wipe up spills wrap gum and throw it in the waste basket clean out lockers be gentle with doors don't climb on bathroom basins play on the playground not in shrubs and trees and don't stock up bathroom drains there are a lot of other things i could tell you about too but you're smart kids i'll bet you can think of them on your own we'll sure try oh just one more suggestion if you find some damage even a little bit of damage like a loose screw in your desk tell your teacher about it right away so it can be fixed before it gets worse okay that's a good idea hi sorry i was gone so long did i hear you talking to someone you'll never believe us when we tell you wow look at the time people are gonna start showing up for the open house any minute now i'll just keep the front doors open wait up i'll go with you hi mr dylan oh hi kids say mr dylan have you been in there in the office all this time now uh what makes you ask that bill oh so it wasn't you talking over the pa system the whole time fooled you did not that was a dirty trick oh i don't think so everything i said was true this is a good old school building and it's taken some pretty rough treatment from you kids at times well your little act sure worked on me i'm to be a lot more careful around here from now on me too [Music] well i'm glad my performance paid off i don't think any of us want to spend all week in a rundown dirty old building i sure don't just stop and think how much it costs to fix up the things that get damaged around here all the money we spend for paint and repairs could go for new games or playground equipment for you kids i'm all for that well i should have known that school buildings can't talk oh don't be too sure of that creepy so creepy all right um i am reminded when i visited san francisco and i was i can't remember what a show was doing is but i was doing it at ata which was um stephen parr was there uh and this show goes out to steven carr who passed away last year or last week um anyways so i was gonna show that film but the the can was very similar to another orange can that i had a lot of cintron films in the 80s late 70s were in orange cans um and so i i don't know what happened but basically i pulled out and i did this introduction about oh you know is your school room haunted i don't know and showed a film called using the pocket calculator which is like one of the driest films that i have about well it's actually kind of it's like a fetish type of thing um because it's really really like you know hit to you know how do you add 15 plus 14 go press the one button and then you press the five button then you hit the plus button then you hit the one button then you hit the four button and then you hit the equals button just really oh but you know we rolled with it and uh actually somebody came up to me afterwards is like that was awesome that was probably better than the other movie you were going to show and i'm like well okay sure i get it um [Laughter] so all right i asked you guys which movie you wanted to see and it was close but um people want to see winner of the witch and um maybe they think they're thinking the donovan song season of the witch oh this has a pack problem all right hold on one second don't watch me do this everybody all right let's see if this works out if not i might have to put on a teeny weeny teeny-weeny in the witch woman and get this pack and we'll see what happens so winter winter of the witch won but uh this is a longer film and i did not look it up i know there's a witch in it that's all i know it's not a metaphorical witch it's an actual witch although who knows man all these films that suppose purport to be about haunted houses or whatever have all been something else this has got some um all right great um so some quick words uh next month i'll have to get the date on it but uh i think i'm gonna show something called uh leftovers film leftovers um because it'll be like right after thanksgiving and we'll be eating a bunch of leftovers so i'll be showing films that are things that don't fit in any particular category uh things that maybe i was gonna put in a show but didn't have time for um et cetera plus i got a bunch of stuff on ebay recently and a lot of weird stuff that i want they just don't fit in one show like so i might smoosh them all together and make a delicious um turkey and dressing sandwich with them so for your delight and horror um so oh crap so i can't even i can never do this right so if i do right there you can donate at patreon.com av geeks that's a place it's it's kind of like a subscription tip jar it's an opportunity for you to kick in some cash that we will immediately spend on equipment or films on ebay uh i just bought another film from the ukraine about propaganda that i'm very excited to watch and show you so maybe that will be coming up in an upcoming show uh maybe i'll show it next next time uh anyways so uh here is winter of the witch and i'll say goodbye but i will come back afterwards all right so here we go [Music] one day nikki and his mother decided big night and go to live in the country where the air is fresh and life is more peaceful early in the morning as the city was waking up they packed their small car and prepared to leave [Music] uh so [Music] after driving all morning nikki and his mother finally stopped in a small village they visited a man who sold houses madam you have come to the right place i have all kinds of houses and all kinds of prices small medium large extra large red white or blue old or new you name it dudley poindexter will come through now uh just what kind of a place did you have in mind oh well something comfortable small but comfortable um with a fireplace and uh bright rooms hmm i have just the thing for you 20 rooms five bedrooms three chimneys and two kitchens oh i'm afraid that's gonna be a bit beyond our budget ah i may be out of my mind i may be crazy i am going to make a deal for you madam the place is yours for uh 500 a whole house for 500. how about 400 lovely sign right here [Applause] down the road bye bye bye listen to me listen to me you know that old haunted house way out on the edge of town well i finally sold it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hmm [Music] in me [Music] [Music] so what a mess how are we ever going to clean this place up it's cold mommy can i make a fire yes i think we can use some heat what was that [Music] and what are you doing in my house who are you i'm a witch that's who i am and this is my house this is our house because we bought it your house wool weeds i've lived here for 300 years maybe she is a witch maybe indeed listen i don't know who you are or what you are we've had a lot of troubles lately oh you all have our problems no need to be cranky cranky this house is not big enough for three of us so two of us will have to go we are not leaving our new house i'm not leaving my old house besides where would i go there aren't many broken down houses left nowadays listen if you want to do something useful why don't you help us clean up this house clean up this house oh impossible this house has to have cobwebs in every corner black curtains at the window and wall-to-wall dust on the floors all right i don't know what i'm going to do with you but for the time being you can have the room up in the attic the old witch was not at all pleased with her new company but there didn't seem to be much else for her to do but retire to the attic which she had to share with three bats a mouse and her big black pot i wonder if she's a good witch or a bad witch if we didn't have enough problems already is he going to be a problem i don't know i never lived with a witch before can she stay [Applause] we'll see i hope she's a good [Applause] time for bed nikki we'll talk about it in a moment [Applause] i'm glad we bought this house [Applause] [Music] for the next two weeks the witch never left a room every night she played old music on an old phonograph and every day she would sit in bed reading the newspapers which nikki brought to her the old witch became gloomy and depressed the news was always bad and none of the want ads ever seemed to want an old witch [Music] meanwhile nikki and his mother worked hard cleaning the house and decorating all the rooms [Music] [Applause] [Applause] so [Music] the old witch did some decorating of her own she spun cobwebs all over her room is [Music] [Music] i'm old and unwanted world so full of evil nowadays that people don't need witches anymore why don't you stop being a witch stop being a witch impossible could you stop being a little boy or a chair stop being a chair or a mouse stop being a mouse i've been a witch for 300 years that's all i can be do all witches die no we just fade away little by little we lose our powers can you wiggle your ears no neither can i can you fly yes i used to find that broomstick over there but it's an old model they don't make the parts anymore oh what wouldn't i give to be back in the good old days what did you do in the good old days well in the good old days this house was full of witches and i used to cook for them what did you cook everything that which is like mostly magic foods would you cook for us cook for you oh why didn't i think of that before that's the answer we'll show them what an old witch can do boy we accept your offer tonight we begin to cook [Music] [Laughter] and so all that night the old witch worked hard cooking up a strange brew in a big black pot can i taste what can i take not now but when i'm finished you can have as much as you like [Music] wake up wake up boy i finished i've made my magic special tip great what is it pancakes blueberry pancakes but all that work for pancakes they're not just pancakes they're the final solution to the unhappiness problem go on go on try some wow the magic pancakes they make people happy what's going on here pancakes mommy magic pancakes what i've been cooking making a mess is more like it need any help don't hesitate to call on us hello nikki we are going into the happiness this [Music] the next day nikki and his mother began turning their living room into a pancake parlor and in a very short time they were ready to open for business on the first day they invited all the neighbors to come to a gala pancake party [Music] soon word got around and people came from miles and miles just to taste those delicious [Music] so [Music] my so [Music] the pancakes were a huge success and nikki and the old witch became the best of friends he helped her in the kitchen and every day they took long walks together in the country [Music] before we met you were you a good witch or a bad in those days people needed a little scary now and then but times have changed people are already scared they need something they can believe in and i've given them something to believe in the goodness of the pancake watch watch how people are eating my they're all happy some of them are happy for the first time in their lives but you're happy your mother's happy the house is happy and when people are happy and they want to make other people happy someday and everyone is happy then i'm going to
