um [Music] and how we play with them and how we take care of them but first we're going to hear a story about how we get toys and where they come from the story is called the toy truck once there was a little telephone repair truck it looked just like the real ones that you see on the street every day but this was a toy truck it came from a toy factory where many people worked to make it [Music] watch how the parts of the truck are put together [Music] so [Music] oh as each truck is finished it is tested to be sure it will work many trucks are made in the factory but one particular truck had a little spot of yellow paint that was an accident this little truck and all the others were packed in boxes [Music] outside the factory the boxes were loaded into a truck and taken to the railroad station trains carried the toys to cities and towns all over the country then they were unloaded to be delivered to stores think how far the toys have traveled how many people worked to bring the toys here from the factory and think how many people worked to make all the other toys in the store [Applause] [Music] [Music] hey [Music] it's fun to go to the toy store where the shelves are full of toys it's a wonderful make-believe land just right for girls and boys now some of the toy telephone trucks had come to this store to be sold to finish their long trip from the factory to the homes of girls and boys look there's the truck with a spot of yellow paint who do you suppose will buy it the toy store was big and many people came to look at the toys and to buy them sometimes people bought toys for birthday presents sometimes people bought toys to put away until christmas sometimes children saved up money so they could buy toys for themselves many people bought the toy telephone trucks until there were only two left and soon the only truck left on the counter was the one with a spot of paint one little boy wanted it but his mother thought he was too young for it one girl liked the way it looked but she thought she was too old for it wouldn't anyone buy the truck with a spot of paint then along came curtis david wilson iii his friends all call him skipper skipper was just the right age for the telephone repair truck if only he might buy the truck now there were all sorts of toys in the store but somehow skipper took a special liking to this particular one now skipper didn't have any money but mother could see how much he liked it so do you know what she did yes mother bought the telephone repair truck for skipper is going to be a special day for skipper can you guess what day it was going to be yes mother was buying the truck for a birthday surprise and so the little telephone repair truck with the yellow spot left the toy store with skipper and his mother well the next day was skipper's birthday he was having fun playing games with his friends he was also having fun playing with the birthday presents his friends and his family had given him he was going to enjoy these toys for a long time but there was one present skipper didn't know about yet mother knew about it father knew about it and we know about it too don't we it is skipper thought this was the best gift of all he thanked mother and father for giving him the truck but we know that other people helped skipper get his truck don't we the people who worked in the toy factory the men who took the toys from the factory to the store the people who worked in the toy store all these people helped skipper get his telephone repair truck now skipper wanted his friends to see and enjoy it he wanted them all to have as much fun with it as he was going to have and skipper was going to take good care of it so it would last for a long long time now we know the story of the toy truck we know where toys come from and how we get them now let's tell about our own toys wouldn't you like to tell how you play with your favorite toys and how you take care of them [Music] why yes i would love to talk about that let me rewind this real quick welcome everybody how are you doing um it's gonna be out of focus i wonder uh oh shoot there we go it's a little bit better there a little bit better get my glasses off so we don't have a glare anyways uh i am skip alzheimer of av geeks thanks everybody for uh joining me um so it was i was originally this kind of a bait and switch i was originally going to show you recent film acquisitions but i don't have many or i don't have any that are really great so i was like i can't really do a screening based on that um it's really because i haven't done one in a while um so i decided to indulge myself i mean not that i'm not indulging myself all the time when i'm showing you this stuff but i thought i would indulge myself because my birthday is coming up next weekend and i have for many years wanted to do a uh show featuring films about skip or skipper um that is my name don't wear it out um but uh yeah so over the years i've been taking notes every time i run across the film that either has a character name skipper or skippy or um you know whatever so this last film was toy telephone truck and i was so pleased to see that uh the character at the end his name is skipper um so yeah what i like about this is that um going with this this kind of theme means that i show a diversity of a wide variety of different types of films and different genres and i love when stuff like that happens when you know i pick something and it's like oh we're going to watch a film from this or we're going to watch a film from this this this is totally unrelated to this and i love something like that so again totally indulgent so let's see some of these i've shown before but some of them you have not seen so this is one that um has a different type of genre that i really like and what's interesting is that this is uh from a show that's still a tv show that's still happening i think this is how it's made which is canadian in origin but this shows me that how it's made is probably from the 70s at least and that it was i'm not sure what if it was on canadian uh educational television or what but um i have a couple of films from this series in my collection and they don't have the weird kind of electronic dance music in them and they don't have that awesome uh narrator who uh has these horrible puns every once while uh but it is the same gist it is uh how stuff is made so this one is let me type this in as i'm talking to you um yeah in case you don't know i i'm 80 geeks and i collect old films and i show them to folks like you most of you it seems like i know who you are but um just in case you forgot um so uh this film is peanut butter enjoy [Music] do [Music] [Music] you [Music] so [Music] so um as much as i love this film it it does remind me of the fact that uh skippy peanut butter was the bane of my childhood um my nickname my real name is john mark but my nickname is skip short for skipper not skippy i include this because you know it's still skip and it is um a beautiful film um but yes being called skippy peanut butter for most of my uh educate of my early elementary years was galling i also seem to remember not liking the song skip to my lou and even zippity doo dog raised my hackles a little bit i guess i was very sensitive about my name i i'm not sure why um i i love it now um even though legally it's not it's not skipped but you know what are you gonna do um anyways yeah so uh as you can see i don't know if any of you are fans of how it's made now um the the show because it's still showing on the science network and i think it's still showing uh internationally um the uh a little bit more low-tech um with note cards and little felt-tip pins that say sold of course and then also you can tell canadian because it's got a required bilingual uh english in uh french so i think this was some sort of uh government funded thing but beautiful man beautiful footage all right so where can we go now so actually it's fascinating two manufacturing films films about manufacturing um yeah what can i do now well that leads me to the next film which is and i've shown this one uh maybe you've seen it maybe not uh i don't know if this is focusing on this or not turn this on what happens can you see this yeah i can't tell i'm not even wearing my glasses um it basically says um what will skip do so i asked myself that question and this film will give me the answer um and i have shown this i showed this months ago maybe earlier in the year maybe even last year i'm not sure anyways indulge me it's my birthday coming up in a week or so and as you can tell if you've never seen this before i'm actually pulling the film out threading it up and running it on this german telephony that was state of the art like i don't know 10 years ago and i am threading it and watch it and it's going to be beamed into your homes the miracle of technology wonderful horrible thing that is the internet all right so let's find out what uh skip will do i have a guess actually i can't even remember what this film is about it's funny all right anyways what was gonna do here we go so [Music] [Music] skip you're old enough to have some money we're going to try you with 50 cents a week week now you understand that this is all you get um what happens if i spend too much well this is all the money that you get and we'll give you this and if you spend it that's all you get this week there won't be any more we want to see how you can handle the money honey before we give you any more we have to do a good job of it okay [Music] all right boys uh i want to talk to you a little bit about this trip that we're planning to take at our next meeting it'll be necessary that you each bring your quarter that we have talked about in the past this quarter is to cover the cost of the snack and the transportation for this little trip that we're planning now if you don't bring the quarter you will not be able to go on the trip because it's planned so that each boy pays for his share of the trip now to go on to the clothes that we'll wear and the food that we'll take this we'll discuss at the next meeting so that uh you boys will know what we're going to eat and what clothes to wear on this hike the hike that we're planting is is along a stream bed and up into the mountains yeah it's really neat hey that's groovy can i brought from you you sell it to me i don't think so oh come on no oh come on okay i'll sell it to you for a quarter got four more of those things yeah that's really neat i'll give you the four other things in a while that's my party okay hey that looks great what is it it's cake and ice cream how much does it cost 15. [Music] that'll be 15 cents please thank you yes [Music] oh hi skip don't forget about the meeting tonight don't forget about your money [Music] okay now don't forget boys tomorrow's meeting is the last chance to bring in the 25 cents for our trip [Music] now that's all you get for this week [Applause] hi skip or skip what's the matter [Music] well that film is um does not feature me it certainly does um feature me in spirit uh basically uh this thing's not really focusing on me for some reason and it's too dark i'm gonna bring up some there it is that's weird okay anyways um definitely uh even though that's not me that is me um i did not have an allowance as a kid and so anytime i had money i would burn it i would burn it on the stupidest stuff and that propeller toy yes i had one i broke it within minutes of breaking it out of the packaging i had probably five minutes of joy with it and then it just fell apart so um again it's not me in that film but it really is and and it might be of many of us kids like you know no sense of fiscal responsibility um you know i would say that maybe i have never learned fiscal responsibility having invested money in weird pieces of equipment and like 25 000 films and all that this one also asks a question um and kind of dips into another genre uh unfortunately i think i i don't have a whole lot of skip films so you know our show might end a little bit earlier than usual but i don't know we'll see actually i have like two more left um this is uh what now skipper another great film that's meant for adults actually and i love this because it is a safety film and i showed this when i did a show in texas on a lake and um on a boat pontoon boat and i showed a bunch of bus or a boat safety films and then we went swimming and had sausages it was glorious all right so here is um what now skipper enjoy [Applause] too bad we can't put out all fires that easily too bad we can't run from all fires [Music] and what to use to put it out aboard a boat what's burning is usually the most potentially dangerous material you carry on board your fuel gasoline it's dangerous because there is always a thin layer of vapors coming off the surface this is easy to ignite with an open flame or spark the heat generated by the fire produces more vapor more fire and more heat and more vapor and so on to break this cycle and put out the flame you can smother the fire and remove the oxygen a fire extinguishing agent such as dry chemical does the same thing smothers the fire and removes the oxygen what's burning a flammable liquid a class b fire as it's called so what do you use on it water true there's plenty available but it will be of no help on this kind of fire in fact water may make it worse by scattering the burning liquid so to be smart don't use water on a burning liquid then what do you use a marine fire extinguisher that is designed for the job there are four types carbon dioxide dry chemical foam freon suppose you have a carbon dioxide extinguisher available okay skipper go to work pull the trigger ring and pull up the horn now it's activated and ready to go hold the extinguisher by the handle in an upright position attack the fire by directing the agent at the base of the flames start at one side and sweep across as though you were trying to separate the flames from the liquid don't get too close to the fire just close enough to let the extinguisher do its work never never touch the horn of a carbon dioxide extinguisher when it's in use the extreme cold of the carbon dioxide will damage your flesh and you may leave the skin of your palm on the horn like this even though you succeeded in putting out the flames on the burning liquid you have to be careful of flashback that's the result of vapors that could reignite almost instantly from heat that is built up in the liquid and you'd have another fire on your hands so it's a good idea to have a reserve extinguisher on hand to handle the flashback more than the minimum one or two that's required for your size boat if you had a dry chemical extinguisher you could also fight a class b fire effectively you grab it activate it aim the nozzle squeeze the lever again aim at the base of the flames start at one edge and sweep rapidly from side to side a novice firefighter is not too effective the first time he uses an extinguisher and he could waste a lot of agent so be sure to carry extra extinguishers on your boat a freon extinguisher can also put out a class b fire activate it and pull up the horn use it just like you did the carbon dioxide and the dry chemical freon like co2 is cold don't touch the horn remember that many marine portable extinguishers if used in a steady stream will last only about 10 to 20 seconds instead use short sweeping bursts because of the danger of flashback or large fires that's another good reason to carry extra extinguishers aboard the fourth type of marine fire extinguisher you can use on class b fires is foam it's different from the others in the way you use it foam puts out the fire by smothering and cooling it so you want to put a layer of foam over the burning surface you activate the extinguisher by turning it upside down then direct the foam toward a bulkhead or similar object so it will flow down and over the burning liquid this increases the smothering qualities of the foam if this flow across technique isn't workable in your situation use the sweeping action you saw before it takes longer for foam to put out a given fire than for the other three types but once foam has smothered the fire there is very little danger of flashback now you know what to do with a burning liquid would you be able to do it sure if you knew where you put your extinguisher if you have it readily accessible where you can grab it fast that doesn't mean behind the galley stove or in the engine compartment it's a federal regulation that the extinguisher must be readily accessible but more than that it's common sense so to prevent this do this keep your extinguisher where you can get at it even better skipper let's prevent that fire from starting in the first place statistics show that the majority of class b fires occur during or directly after fueling here are some preventive measures to remember about fueling keep the gasoline nozzle directly in contact with the fuel tank this will prevent static sparks that could ignite the vapors fill portable tanks on the pier to minimize chance of spilling fuel in the boat after fueling ventilate your boat your bilges too for at least five minutes before you start your engine use your nose to sniff around for fumes if your engine will not start the reason could be too many fumes and not enough air in the engine compartment in this case don't try to start your engine unless you have a lot of insurance as the air mixes with the concentrated gas fumes it becomes explosive and this is no time to introduce an ignition spark that's why you should open up your engine compartment ventilate it and check for leaks in the fuel line and the fuel tank don't try to start your engine until it can pass the sniff test there are better ways to get a bang out of boating remember skipper gassing up is serious business don't fuel around what else can burn on your boat how about the electrical and electronic equipment your radio depth finder and such a fire involving energized electrical equipment is called a class c fire extinguishing it requires the same special handling you'd give to any live electrical current you never use water or foam on a class c fire you can be electrocuted that way the other agents carbon dioxide dry chemical and freon are all non-conductors of electricity and can be used safely and effectively on class c fires your first step is to turn off the current if you can do it safely you can put out a class c fire with either carbon dioxide dry chemical or freon now get your extinguisher aim at the base of the flames sweep rapidly from one side to the other in short spurts be on the lookout for flashback if you shut off the current the danger of flashback is decreased a word of caution in a tension charged situation you might hit the wrong switch there may be live current in the fire never use foam or water there is only one kind of fire on which you can use water a class a fire you have a class a fire when what's burning is ordinary combustible materials such as wood cloth and paper they leave glowing coals or embers when they burn the best extinguishing agent is plain old water it soaks the fuel and lowers its temperature almost instantly here's a class a fire burning paper towels in an emergency you can use one of the other extinguishing agents on a class a fire aim it at the base of the flames and sweep from side to side don't forget you can use water on a class a fire keep a bucket aboard okay skipper in an emergency are you going to be able to remember all this information about a b and c fires and what to use the handy guide is right on your extinguisher look at the label you'll see a letter and a roman numeral the letter indicates the class of fire you can use it on a b and c the roman numeral is the measure of a marine fire extinguisher's effectiveness the higher the number the greater its capability to fight a given fire the hand portable extinguishers required by the coast guard for use on recreational boats are of b1 or b2 classification they must have the words u.s coast guard approved on them some extinguishers have all three letters on them a b and c and can fight all three classes of fire others have both b and c designations on them and can fight those classes of fire if they are size one or two and coast guard approved they are all acceptable for use on recreational boats you may of course carry any type of additional firefighting equipment to be safer so when you're shopping for an extinguisher read the label thoroughly it's your best source of information about the extinguisher it tells you everything you should know about whether or not it's coast guard approved how to use it and how to maintain it read it again before you get underway to refresh your memory some boats have fixed firefighting equipment installed in engine spaces these are approved by the coast guard and regardless of size are equal to one b1 extinguisher for meeting federal requirements now that you know all this good scoop about fire extinguishers you're ready to spend your money right nope you need to know the minimum federal requirements for your class of boat that is how many coast guard approved extinguishers you have to have on board if you have an outboard motor boat less than 26 feet constructed with no spaces in which explosive or flammable gases or vapors can be trapped you don't have to carry any type fire extinguisher but it's recommended that you carry at least one b1 type extinguisher anyway however if your boat is less than twenty six feet and it does have spaces that can trap explosive or flammable gases or vapors this is the minimum you need one b1 type extinguisher or a fixed fire extinguishing system in the machinery spaces if your boat is 26 feet or longer but less than 40 feet you need at least two b1s or one b2 even if you have a fixed fire extinguishing system in the machinery spaces you still need at least one b1 for a boat of 40 feet but not more than 65 feet you need at least three b1s or one b1 and 1b2 if you have a fixed firefighting system in the machinery spaces you still need at least two b1s or one b2 don't forget these are only minimum requirements they won't guarantee you'll be able to put out all fires you might encounter and they might not leave you with enough extinguishing agent to cope with flashbacks be safe carry more than the minimum okay now you have the right kind of extinguisher you know how to use it you've stored it where you can get it fast you're all set to go nope one more thing is it in good operating condition does it work obviously it's no good unless you can get a charge out of it sorry about that skipper so inspect your extinguisher periodically again check the label for maintenance instructions check the gauge to ensure that your extinguisher is fully charged if it doesn't have a gauge you should weigh it if you're in doubt your local fire department or coast guard auxiliary unit will be glad to help you if you have used it be sure to recharge it as soon as you can if you don't you may find yourself empty-handed in an emergency okay skipper you're ready to shove off remember to keep your happy boating story from becoming a tragedy keep our cast of characters in mind the old team of water and bailing bucket is always the hero in class a fires but the villain in b and c flickers next carbon dioxide a cool number best known for her effectiveness in b and c fires she can also handle parts in small a fires she plays best moving swiftly from stage left to stage right at the base of the flames she's a gas one of the more popular stars is dry chemical he can play a good role drowning b and c fires and he too can play a role in small a fires he works best in sweeping scenes from side to side direct him at the base of the flames freon is a newcomer who is quite effective like dry chemical he's especially good in b and c fires and finally phone he responds well to a different type of direction while slower to get into his role than the others he prevents critical flashbacks and controls the scene longer especially in class b fires those are the performers here's the program read the label use the proper extinguisher for each class of fire keep your fire extinguishers operable and readily accessible ventilate after fueling use the sniff test to check for accumulation of fumes be safe exceed the minimum requirements [Music] remember safe boating is no accident [Music] all right thanks coast guard so um what time is it a42 anyways i'm skip alzheimer uh and i'm showing films that have the word skip in the title or so have a character named skip or um have a skipper of a ship in them um why am i doing this because i can uh because i actually have films that have uh these uh titles um and these characters and deal with these subject matters so um it's been something for years i'm like you know what i should do a skip show but i don't if i did one live i don't think anybody would come to it so it's you guys i'm i'm unleashing it on you and i appreciate your comments and your indulgence uh for this um because it's my birthday coming up and i figured you know what the heck what the hey um so yeah that was a uh excruciating uh film about fire extinguishers on boats um so we love it i have another one about uh how you get the boat to um the dock and back and what can go horribly wrong uh including boats like you know flying off of um i don't know what you call them flying off the back of trucks and things like that um so uh that's fun that's for another day uh so anyways i got uh i got some more films here how about that some more skip film anyways i collect these and i show them to folks like you uh live on the internet etc i've actually just booked some shows in october wait no sorry november and december october uh is kind of up in the air because i thought i was going to be going to iceland to help with a whole movie day but i'm not it's going to be next year perhaps um so what i'm going to do is um i'm going to do some stuff at the alamo i'm going to do a home movie day in raleigh north carolina at the harrison library on october 19th and i'll probably do some more shows streaming events um yeah there you go so i'm rewinding film uh if you like what but not really in that it is yeah it's hard to describe what the deal is but there's there's people that work with davis on this um but i don't know if it's you know really a sid davis film i think he distributed it but it's about a dog named skipper and i've shown this film a lot because i love it um it's about a racist dog in the 50s and um how he comes to terms with his racism it's pretty great it's um you know you don't really actually start seeing diverse casts in educational films um until the 60s when the civil rights movement was taking place and there was a lot more attention to that you would see people of color occasionally um especially in duck and cover duncan cover was filmed in astoria in like 1950 or something like that and there there's actually people there's students of color uh in that classroom um but they just are there they don't actually do anything this one has speaking parts well speaking part um you know the reason i feel like this is a uh to davis is because the narrator does other sid davis films there's the the sid davis thing where it's all voice it's all like the narrator talking for kids people there's no actual um on-site sound it's a no sound sync and that's a budget thing um but then maybe in the credits there's some more sid davis stuff in there it's been a while since we've actually watched the credits i'm so busy like when i run a film like i'm making sure that it's all threaded okay and you know i'm getting a quick eye to this to the focus but yeah let's watch this let's see so this is uh skipper learns a lesson um a lesson that we all learn uh let me go to the right thing there's this control panel ahead of me um with this software which is great but sometimes you get to the wrong tab and things go chaotic all right so here's a skipper learns a lesson enjoy [Music] once upon a time in a neighborhood pretty much like yours perhaps there were some children who played together all the time there was betty mike pete and larry they had lots of fun digging in a vacant lot one day a new girl moved into the neighborhood her name was susan and she had a dog whose name was skipper skipper was a cute little dog and susan was very fond of him she liked to pet him and play with him she liked to teach him tricks too of course skipper loved susan he liked to play with her and he liked to do the tricks she'd taught him but fond of susan was of skipper she didn't want to play with him all the time and when the children who lived in the neighborhood came along she was glad to see them they invited susan to play in the vacant lot with them larry said come and play with us we're digging a trench mike said if you come and play with us you can have one of our shovels you should see our trench pete said it's long and wide and deep too we're having fun i'd like you to play with us said betty i've been hoping a girl would move into our neighborhood please come susan decided to play with the children she asked skipper to come along but skipper refused to go he didn't like the looks of these new children and he wouldn't play with them while susan and her new friends went off to have a good time skipper stayed at home on the porch i won't have anything to do with such funny-looking children he told himself so he just stayed there and soaked now there were some dogs in this neighborhood they belong to susan's new friends they played together too when they saw skipper sitting alone on the porch they came over to ask him to join them but when the first dog came up and invited skipper to play skipper looked at him and barked a mean bark i won't play with you he said you have a funny shape the first dog's feelings were hurt so he turned around and left the second dog came up to skipper come and play with us he said but skipper didn't like the size of this dog he was too big so he snarled and barked at him telling him to go away the big dog backed away he was a nice dog and didn't want to fight skipper looked at the third dog who was still sitting on the lawn and he snarled and barked again in the meanest voice he could manage i don't like the color of that dog's coat he said to himself he snarled and barked some more and he chased the new dogs all the way down the street as skipper trotted back to the porch he thought to himself i certainly won't play with dogs like those i don't like their looks i'll just wait until a dog who's the right size shape and color comes along or i won't play at all so skipper just sat and sat and sat but soon he got tired of sitting he decided to look for something to do no skipper don't go into the garage there's poster paint in there no skipper skipper [Music] uh-oh poor skipper poster paint all over him and off he went to find susan to ask her to clean him up as he started down the street he met the first dog go away said the dog go away you look funny skipper was surprised no one had ever spoken to him like that before but the new dog sounded so angry that skipper thought he'd better leave and then he met the second dog the second dog looked at skipper and said go away you're funny maybe you don't remember me skipper said to him i'm skipper you wanted to play with me before not now said the second dog go away he sounded angrier than the first dog and just as skipper was about to leave the other dogs came up hiding behind the big dog the third dog said go away skipper we don't like you skipper had had enough look he said you're all being pretty silly this is just paint on me it's only on the outside inside i'm no different than i was before you're the silly one said the big dog we don't care what you're like on the outside it's inside that matters and inside you're not a nice dog and then the three dogs chased skipper all the way home back on his front porch skipper felt very sorry for himself he whimpered and complained in the saddest voice he could manage in the vacant lot where she was playing susan heard skipper with the other children following her she raced off to see what was wrong as soon as she saw him she knew what was wrong she went into the house for soap water and a wash tub in the backyard all the children helped give skipper a good bath and while they washed him skipper did a lot of thinking i have been a silly dog he said to himself imagine not liking others because of their looks while the children dried him he thought some more size shape or color make no difference after all being nice is the only thing that counts and being nice is something inside nothing else really matters after skipper was washed and dried everyone went back to play in the vacant lot the other dogs were there skipper said to them i'm sorry about the way i behaved i'd like to play with you now if you'll let me after that everyone played together and had a good time [Music] and of course susan was very proud of skipper [Applause] [Music] oops the leader popped on that one so it's it's uh distributed by encyclopedia britannica but man there's there's definitely some sid davis-esque things going on there and uh paul paul brunford um did some other films about dogs so um uh he comes by it honestly uh telling these kind of fables i did a screening recently called uh small furry animals in the sins of man which skipper was one of the sins and also showed snookum bears on a rampage and a film about bullying with some puppets where there's this little bear who bullies other his friends dressed as a cartoon or a comic book character then uh of course i showed uh the disney war academy award-winning documentary white wilderness and i showed the lemmings portion where we see lemmings committing suicide which is a beautiful color footage slow motion camera shot is set up in these these places where you see these just dynamic shots of these these lemmings kind of somersaulting into the water to their death it's it's really something and of course it's all faked um because lemons don't commit suicide so the film is also known as the disney stuff film because they basically pushed a bunch of lemons off a cliff maybe i'll show that at some point won an academy award all right this is where it all comes together all comes together this camera kind of sucks just has this weird anyways i'll have to figure it out i guess i have to actually read the manual for this camera anyways this is uh skippy in the three r's uh which talks about it's the value of public education um or it might be introducing kids the concept of what school is going to be like it's been a long time since i've seen this one so it's almost like i haven't seen it but i do know it has the word skippy in the title and i know that there's a kid named skippy and i think he rides a bike so those are things i definitely know three r's of course reading writing arithmetic it's not really three r's it's an r a w and an a hmm when it's sticky it's always a pain in the butt yep there's a leader just tore it off there we go wow very shortly all right there's that do a quick adjustment of some things here okay all right here is uh skippy in the three r's enjoy uh [Music] when you're the parent day of school you suddenly find yourself hoping very hard hoping that he has a good teacher but the classrooms are warm you wish you could go with him as you did yesterday but you do want him to grow and you encourage his independence [Music] one [Music] well here it is school and here you are skippy gordon first grader yesterday when mother came with you to sign up miss temple said you could feed the fish [Music] careful not too much she said you could and she remembered then she asked you to find seats around the table the first day of school the first day of a planned routine which will envelop you for half your waking hours and which will continue for the next 10 15 or even 20 years of your life what time and thought and effort we have put into our public schools all this that you skippy gordon shall learn reading writing arithmetic and many other important things learn them yes but even more important learn to use them naturally and easily throughout your whole life miss temple is a good teacher professional competent skippy and the others are going to learn their three r's some will learn sooner than others but they will all learn for miss temple has a plan miss temple knows that skippy will learn best those things he himself wants and needs to learn [Music] good morning boys and girls well here we all are and we're going to have lots of fun finding out things together suppose we start by finding out each other's names let's start at this table here i want you each to stand up so we can see who you are and tell me your name now i'll write it up here on the board now who will be first my name is gail gail my name is skippy skippy skippy watched miss temple right that was his own name she was writing up there of course he was skippy gordon and that was his name [Music] it would be stretching a point to say that skippy can read his name but he knows that those letters are his name one down from the top in the third row right where miss temple wrote it whoops splice broke one second where is it let's try that again if there's any doubt this is not live um there you go [Music] yep trying to do this on the fly not doing this the way i should do it but um just to get the show on the road because i don't want to have to go run and find the splicer so no you suck so close so all right more tape longer piece if i could wear the webcam as a headlamp and i can show you what i'm doing maybe in the future i'll figure out a way to do that if you're interested i don't know and then you know if i did that and of course i would do it the way i'm supposed to do it i would actually have a splicer okay here we go [Music] many interesting things to be found in books and would want to read books for themselves and all the time this temple read his name skippy go there on the board where miss temple had written it when miss temple finished reading the story they talked about it how many fish did the little fisherman catch how many fish already miss temple has made a beginning on the three r's reading the story writing a simple lettering and arithmetic how many [Music] well skippy what did you learn in school today that's a big question skippy did find out something but he hasn't labeled them today i learned what's the matter don't you like school it won't be so bad once you get used to it not like school won't be so bad is school supposed to be something he's not to like during the first week skippy and the others learned that clay paste scissors and crayons were more than play things clay can tell a story as well as words [Music] joan brought some snails for the aquarium to help keep it clean they learned a new game to play at recess they took turns and found that by taking turns everybody had a chance [Music] they listened to music tried out sounds and rhythms [Music] [Applause] they painted pictures and skippy made a picture of a house his house [Music] yes the children learned many things and miss temple was learning too learning which children were ready eager for the next steps which children were puzzled needing patience and understanding to help them along [Music] what a nice picture we can make an s or skippy [Music] yes but his whole name skippy was up there on the chart of course it was his picture and should have his name on [Music] i [Music] s k i p p [Music] y there skippy this temple would be the last to say that skippy has learned to write but he has made a beginning and more important he has done it because he skippy gordon wanted and needed to do it [Music] [Applause] i'm some things you learned quick and hard the boys were right it is a baby strike [Music] then how much does a bike cost you've got a good tricycle what's the matter with that i mean a real bike with two wheelers i don't want a baby strike well we're growing up awfully fast aren't we can i can i have a bite a real one we'll see maybe when you're a little older a real bike costs a lot of money [Music] well skippy you're still thinking about what you're going to draw maybe you'd like to draw some of the things that we made yesterday [Music] miss temple knows skippy well enough by now to see that something is bothering him she does not insist that he get to work or pay attention for she knows that his attention is on something that is bigger of more immediate importance to him she'll keep an eye on him and help when the opportunity offers [Music] things have been going well for this year's first grade the most responsive group she's ever had of course every group seems to be the best once you begin to know them as individuals they continually surprise you with their alertness their eagerness to learn with the understanding they brought with them to the school yes they're coming along not all at the same speed and some are better at one thing than another but things are proceeding proceeding according to plan part of miss temple's plan is to know each child better to know what each needs and how best to help him she knows that joan is quick to grasp a new idea but loses interest quickly too [Music] sydney seems to understand how things fit together writing and telling stories will permit him to explain the things he knows eileen waits to be told what to do she's just beginning now to do the things she herself would like frederick needs experience in just being with other children and doing things together linda was well along in reading and writing when she entered the class and she takes pride perhaps too much in being best [Music] to help skippy find a reason of his own for learning is a part of this temple's plan after several periods of planning and discussion the group has decided on a trip downtown this will give them a common experience one they can share the stores were full of exciting things and skippy saw a bike a real one a two wheeler all right now another story hardware that's right hardware now what do we buy in hardware stores bicycles a reason for learning skippy has given miss temple a clue reading writing arithmetic spelling can be dull things indeed if skippy has to put aside his desire for a bike in order to learn them but if these things can become a way of knowing more about a bike well learning becomes something skippy wants to do by the trip to the stores miss temple has led the group into a common experience each child knows firsthand what the others are talking about and in talking this way a child learns to express himself clearly perhaps they could make stores right here in school who would like that if they divide into groups they could make a whole street of stores let's see who would like to be in the hardware store [Music] [Applause] there's lots to think about and decide and perhaps they should decide on a certain time each day for work on the stores yes there are many things to be learned from the stores and the bicycle is a part of it all now [Music] carolyn what did we say here where did we go we went to the store that's fine ray we saw people buy things that's right gail reading and writing go naturally together ways of finding out and then telling about things they do and see and think and feel these simple words have real meaning based on the child's own experience and as he writes the words he begins to learn the shape and form of his letters this natural easy approach to the three r's is all a part of miss temple's plan snack time offers practice in simple arithmetic blocks a way of learning and working together and as the days pass the stores begin to grow and take shape it's satisfying to build things for yourself and you do have to get the stores built first if your meanings that lie behind the words is the basis for much of skippy's future learning ms temple knows that some children learn to read more quickly than others she gives the quick readers plenty of material who reads more slowly pictures develop an interest a desire to know what the words say some children can paint a story better than they can tell it sharing a common experience enable the children to make a story of their own and as for reading from real books they are available and ready but there should be no hurry or to read well a child must be ready must know a tremendous lot of things things which he brings to the printed page to give the words meaning some of the children have read several books among these simple stories are the planned pre-primers which build vocabulary of simple but necessary words drawing painting modeling building are all ways of communicating and working with these materials helps children become ready for the meanings which we attach to the symbols we call the written word eyes muscular control of the crayon an understanding must all be ready for the complicated task of writing see my bike skippy gordon is not the first six-year-old to want a bicycle miss temple remembers other boys and ways a professionally alert teacher can use the child's own reasons for learning just what is a bicycle anyway a bicycle is travel it is history it is economics it's geography [Music] a bicycle can be anything and everything and for skippy gordon it can be a reason for learning but is a bicycle something which skippy can actually hope to achieve will his parents want him to have one see my bike well that's a fine picture but bicycles cost money you know i think skippy's getting big enough to need a regular allowance well i i guess anybody who can make a picture like this is old enough to have an allowance would you save it to buy a bicycle oh boy can i well how long will it take to save enough money it'll take quite a while daddy now talk it over well now it's time for you to go to bed what a kid the holidays march across the calendar [Music] by spring skippy and the others have learned many things [Music] some have learned more quickly than others but they've all learned skippy has begun to read more important he does read he has discovered that books tell him many interesting things he once told skippy has begun to write and he does write he has found out that writing is a way of telling things to other people [Music] and he has learned some arithmetic not separately as a special subject for numbers are as natural as words a way of telling and knowing things [Music] how much is it four seven five oh i'll take it four seven five oh all this is the beginning of arithmetic [Music] how much is 4750 it's quite a lot more than four times as much as you've got here but you've done fine to say this much so soon besides how do you know you can ride a real bike [Music] money hey how much got there one twelve dollars smoking okay i'll sell it to you for 12. 50 cents let's face my dad first who'd have thought the little guy would stick to his saving find the bike he wanted make the deal himself well it just goes to show goes to show what that another boy has a bike [Music] perhaps it shows that miss temple's plan really does work that skippy's interest in the bike could be used to help him learn reading writing arithmetic yes and much more that modern teachers understand this way of teaching gets better results than memorization meaningless drill and stern discipline and best of all miss temple's plan is no secret other teachers know this way of teaching and as skippy grows and learns through the grades they will be there waiting to help and guide him as he meets new problems yes skippy you're really on your way [Music] we wish we could go with you skippy just once again [Music] [Applause] [Music] be careful skippy if you uh get an allowance don't blow it on crappy uh propeller guns at the local toy store in your classroom all right we are going to try to rewind this and i have to monitor this a little bit um here's an example of a kodachrome film um not every film i have is faded beat red some of them are actually pretty great this you know it's kind of contrasty because it is kodachrome and it's a dupe but um still kind of stunning beautiful color format let's see if this will go past it's kind of a crapshoot here i might have film flying everywhere actually maybe we'll do this how about this see what happens it kind of goes up to the film gate and it goes up meanwhile there was that horrible splice can you see it oh there it went i did it all right oh all right was good cause that could have been um a big mess um let me take my glasses back off again all right skippy in the three r's such a beautiful film um obviously made for adults not for kids um made for parents uh kind of teach them about like what to expect maybe when they send the kids to school like what's going to happen when they go to kindergarten that's what it seems like that film is it's not really for teachers i although it could be for teachers too um because it kind of talks about the strategy of the teacher all right one last uh skip film um this again is a popular film that i like to show whenever i have an opportunity i mean i have 25 000 films but i keep showing the same five ones over and over and over again so indulge me because it's so great this is one of those ones you can just keep watching again and again and again and you can see new stuff and go like my god what was going on um this was made by a company in uh chicago called crocus productions and crocus productions did a lot of stuff stop motion animation and uh so they did the munchers they did schmodel nightmare they did um something about playground spirits um they didn't do the fable of he and she but they did do another one that i just found recently papercorns um anyways uh this one is malacha palka do skip two so i'm gonna try to figure out how to spell it but um enjoy so one shiny day so i've heard folks say a sister and a brother changed themselves to bean bags changed themselves to beanbags and went not far away they traveled to the kingdom where imagination loves to play malaca could do skip to malaca bali could do skip to strange things can happen there [Music] and almost always do [Music] haven't you ever seen wings with a foot before no i used to belong to a postman walk walk walk on the time walk sure i was sore all the time gosh that's a shame maybe if the postman had springs on his shoes you wouldn't have gotten sore or if he had marshmallows under his feet or shoes made from clouds or rollers on his shoes yeah with the propeller on the back to push him along or if the postman had shoes raised in the back you would have been walking downhill all the time good ideas beanbags now i'm the postman here and i it's that direction [Music] you beanbags are so good at solving my problems i now appoint you as the official problem solvers from the entire kingdom of melaka malaca could do skip two now for your first official problem burping bursa [Music] she eats bad foods all the time she has set a bad example so we want to ship her out of the condom but in order to ship her we have to know how much she weighs and we don't have a bathroom scale big enough to weigh her so the problem is how do you weigh burping bertha exactly right but how can we weigh something this big it certainly is an enormous problem the way big burping birth thought they had to find a way if they could not weigh her in behind them she would stay think and imagine what can they say they use their minds and now the kind can send big burping birth but far away you beanbags are really smart problem solvers you were able to weigh burping bertha now we can move her [Music] goodbye bye bye let's go over to smile hill once we
