Description: Born in China of English parents but educated in England, master craftsman Bernard Leach returned to China at age 21 to learn the potter's art. For the last forty years, Leach has labored with local people and student apprentices in the English workshop he established in St. Ives, Cornwall. In this documentary portrait, Leach delineates the artistic elements of the various antique and contemporary pots in his collection and is observed as he fashions his renowned earthenware, applies decorative glaze and awaits, with a mixture of expectation and trepidation, their emergence from the kiln. For Leach, whose designs embody the Taoist and Buddhist principles of harmony and simplicity, the craftsman is almost the only worker left employing heart, hand and head in balance.
