A matter of survival: toxic solvents

Description: In this 1963 film we see the dangers of working in contact with benzene vapours in a science laboratory. Most of the footage takes place in the CSIRO Chemical Research Laboratories, where the scientists enact scenes to show the safety precautions that should be observed, including avoiding breathing the vapours; avoiding spilling the liquid; replacing stoppers in bottles; washing hands; and always using the fume cupboard when pouring the liquid. The film includes an animated opening sequence, an ominous metronomic soundtrack to indicate levels of danger and footage of female scientists in the laboratory.
