[Music] [Applause] Washington DC maintains one of the largest canine branches in the United States the close to 90 man dog teams play an important part in the protection of our nation's capital tourists from all over the world world are attracted by these impressive sites and pickpockets hold up men and robbers are attracted by the tourists a great number of crimes have been committed in these Parks also the thousands of government employees have been targets of muggers and other criminals the introduction of police dogs however has drastically reduced the crime rate Embassy Row where many foreign diplomats and their staffs live and work is constantly patrolled by the Kine branch of the Metropolitan Police Department some police canine units from foreign countries and other cities in the United States receive their training here in Washington sporting events at the Rober F Kennedy Stadium are often attended by high government officials including the president as as well as by Foreign dignitaries it is now a routine procedure to search the VIP section for explosives a short time before the game this task is carried out by the famous bomb dogs of the Washington DC police department this is only a training exercise but as far as the dog Satan is concerned it might as well be the real thing the dog is stained to bark when he locates the explosive he must not touch it for any movement might set off the trigger mechanism from this point the bomb squad will take over another important function of the bomb dogs is to search for explosives that may be hidden in various airport installations and placed on airlines the Washington DC K9 bomb dogs are kept on 24-hour standby for immediate action should such a search be necessary the airlines invest millions of dollars appearances are frequently made by television stations clubs and all sorts of Civic organizations it has reached a point where some departments find it impossible to meet all the requests communities soon become very attached to their police dogs because of these [Music] shows this purse snatch scene in which the dog is hidden in a baby carriage is often the high point of such a demonstration [Music] [Music] after the show the dogs are sent into the audience at first small hands timidly stroke the dog's thick fur and then eagerly pet the animals who remain remarkably patient under the circumstances the child's affection for the dog soon extends to the handlers as well and creates a respect for police officers in general these patient dogs may not know it but they are not only preventing crimes they are making new friends for the law enforcement agencies a couple of months before this film was made this dog and his master Came Upon A Hold up in the 3,000 block of naor Road in Washington DC officer Richard Henry was confronted by three suspects one armed with a thought off shotgun this seemingly playful animal named franzel played a decisive part time he turned shotgun on me I uh shot my service revolver at him officer Gregory who was riding with me released my dog from the car and dog come around the corner subjected the shotgun seeing the dog uh he turned to flee up the steps and at that time the dog got him and uh knocked him to the ground I considered it the the dog saved my life in a different instance it is in Minneapolis where as Henry Wadsworth longell the supervisor of this unit Mike fiser and his giant dog Smokey were recently involved in a very dangerous incident Mike Fisher reports 3:00 one morning I had parked my car in a city park close to refectory building and give my dog an opportunity to run loose for a few minutes I had also taken the time to write my motor Patrol log Smokey few moments later I heard footsteps and observed A man carrying a large chain advancing toward me to the front of the car a rapid Pace at the same time I heard a second person approaching from the rear the dog exited out of the rear door and began pursuing the man and I began pursuing the suspect and I apprehended him a short distance away attempting to scale a small fence I then brought him back this time I observed the dog holding the second suspect at Bay by the refectory building approximately 20 ft from the squad I then put both men against the wall and proceeded to search them for additional weapons which included two chains one of which a motorcycle timing chain the second a piece of log chain quite sure that neither of the two suspects were aware of the presence of the dog in the rear of my squad car I'm also sure that had the dog not been present with me that night that I could have sustained serious injuries from an aggravated assault officer David neber and his dog th received a police award for their part in the arrest of a man who was responsible for a number of vicious attacks on women in Minneapolis a police dog is taught to retrieve any object that is foreign to the ground at the scene of a crime this is especially useful in tall grass or snow and at night while patrolling in the area of luring Park I heard a radio broadcast of an attack which had just occurred in luring Park the original Squad called to the scene requested the assistance of a canine vehicle I went to the park area and released my dog in the area of the attack I told him to fetch and seek which means to retrieve articles of evidence with human scent on them the dog indicated a knife sticking out of the ground near a lake which is in the park I retrieved this knife and held it for evidence I then sent my dog into the area of the attack again and moments later he went into the weeded area of the lake and came back carrying a black notebook he brought this notebook to me and I examined it inside the front cover I noticed a name of a man written on on it it was later learned that the name on this notebook was that of the suspect he was arrested by detectives the next day and admitted participation in eight other attacks in various parts of the city I believe that without the aid of my dog Thor that this crime and the eight other crimes would not have been solved and the suspect would have have been free to go on to commit other Crimes of the same nature the city of the Golden Gate pioneered police dog work in the Pacific coast the dog patrol unit made its first Sor in 1962 the activity sheets show their involvement in 10,000 cases a year from traffic sight to felony arrests now two bomb dogs are available around the clock the city's large neighbor to the South Los anges has so far not discovered the and his dog entered the building alone depending completely on each other the presence of other officers May interfere with the dog's work the officer has no idea what possible danger may confront him that's a good he knows from experience that professional burglars often give up as soon as the Kine core arrives on the scene the search has to be conducted systematically every room every closet is command and coaxing by his master makes him stick to the established stepbystep procedure the officer hopes that the suspect if still on the premises is a professional law breaker and not a person on narcotics the pros are quite predictable but one can never foresee what a person desperate for drugs may do a building search is an excellent example of a canine core in action the remarkable teamwork between dog and man different capabilities adding up to tremendous Effectiveness the officers know how and the dog's acute sense of hearing and fantastic sense of smell where is he good boy good boy n considerable time to find a well- hidden suspect there are cases on record where thorough building investigations did not uncover the hidden suspect but where subsequent searches by dogs revealed the burglar very quickly again Nitro is directed to continue the systematic search the dog is getting increasingly excited his master watches him carefully for any change of pce and reactions this case over the suspect to his colleagues then he re-enters the building to continue the search for possible accomplishes a mass arrest destined for K9 history developed late one night when Officer William langlo and civilian cloes took his dog B for a walk after his constitutional when we were off duty and uh it was a Boulevard lots of trees and a school Under Construction And while we were there in the Darkness three cars uh rolled up um they were quite filled with occupants I couldn't quite make them out it was very dark and uh I heard noises that sounded like the construction Shack was being broken into and I saw them loading objects from this construction site into the cars and uh I knew of course that that a a burglary was in progress so I decided to get the license numbers of the vehicles and proceed to my residence and call the uniform Force so they could take action and I did obtain two of the license numbers and see two of the cars but when I got after the first one it drove off suddenly and it was necessary for me to follow it uh prior to getting the license number and about eight or nine blocks away the uh car suddenly pulled over in front of the residence without paying attention to me at all and at this point I realized that I had the the upper hand because I I had the element of surprise going with me and I got out and I placed the suspects under arrest at gunpoint with my dog and had them throw the keys to the car on the street and I made them lie down on a driveway on on their faces all six at this point I decided to just wait wait for a car to come along and to render me assistance call the police for me and it seems I waited about 5 minutes and the second car did come down the street but it turned out to be the second suspect vehicle containing four people and um I placed those four suspects under arrest and they joined the the first six now gave me a total of 10 and they were arguing at this point they wanted to get up and leave and run and a couple of the instigators were uh saying statements the fact well he can't shoot us all he has a revolver and of course they noticed the dog and uh they were informed that he was not a lapt so uh he was right there with me and again more time passed and the third car the third suspect vehicle came along and I placed them under arrest and they joined the the first 10 and I now had a total of 13 well I knew there were no more Vehicles involved in this particular crime so I knew I felt that the next car down the street would in fact be a civilian Auto and one did show up and a couple coming home and they did call the police for us and the uh uniform Force did come and render us assistance later at the station I learned that this uh uh this crime was perpetrated by a karate instructor in his entire class of pupils but without my dog the uh there would have been no chance to hold 13 suspects at all my dog made the difference dog saved my life in that particular instance I'm also sure that had the dog not been present with me that night that I could have sustained serious injuries from an aggravated assault I believe that without the aid of my dog Thor that this crime in the eight other crimes would not have been solved yes the dog made the difference just some of the many case histories of the K9 cuse in action less glamorous but just as significant are the daily police entries reporting The Continuous group ring demanding work of the police dogs who rose from a controversial element to a recognized Aid in law enforcement 429 10377 but their most important contributions hardly ever find their way into headlines the prevention of crime in districts protected by canine units their answer to the Call of the Wild from the asphalt jungles of our [Music]
