Liu made the switch to directing he has since made seven feature films as a director starting with the 2006 drama D courthouse on horseback Court House won the ARS aunty award at Venice and we're proud to say it was screened at the archive in a precursor series to the CEO B in cooperation with Bernice Reno at Red Hat and director Lee's next film judge from 2009 represses court houses legal drama but relocates the action to the city mr. Liu would return again to the Union countryside of courthouse in two later films deep in the clouds from 2010 and thelen from 2016 the LAN was a selection of the last seob in 2016 and in between the latter yunnan set films mr. Liu directed the critically praised high school drama young style and a remake of the South Korean thriller hide-and-seek the through line in all of these films no matter their locale or ostensible genre is mr. Liu's probing of ethics and social relations especially the fault lines between those who have relative power and those subjected to it that through-line continues into his remarkable new film that you're about to see baby and features the popular Chinese star young me so please help me now to welcome director yoo jae and peter ho Chun will be translating for mr. the theater so we will start this screening now so please switch off all your mobile devices and enjoy baby well thank you for joining us here and for allowing us to screen this is such a phenomenal film my understanding is that there was a very long research process that you went through in the making of the film researching the foster system the foster child system in China interviewing people who would foster children but also persons with disabilities but that the original sort of motivation or the original sort of spark that compelled you to tell this story was something that happened to a friend of yours could you talk about that experience that original sort of true life experience that compelled you to write this story how you experienced it and why it sort of drove you to tell this story chillin chillin junior sure her Worsham be ending up on your the harsh angler John the use your heart honey and Rhonda Cynthia Nativa a Hodad youngin ashore at i/o centenarian howdy super-fancy heard heard your felony sentence really any honkin ego that he sentience ryokan without her and back in 2009 I had a friend who gave birth to a child with birth defect and the doctor gave them three days to consider and they had a pain for three days and at the end of the three days we had a discussion news editor Jennifer washes on I portrayed are you sure highway Audrey on the one tear a hole just sure that our entire Samoa Tonga Dodgers Ohio Stadium grandfather has the horse Allah sure see they all your table shreya ghoshal refer to love it on hunt on the data before I didn't know issue like like this existed and after a painful decision to decide to let the child live and it's been ten years since then and they have sacrificed a lot here to certain Indian Indian Indian theatre for her water page in the two in America's when the code inhibition deliver new new her work and aloha daughter just repeat she does your her tammim bil JEE and a transfer media attention in God's window you'll do by her Indian Union every young it's handled by the hive and toward the end the year I visited a village at the suburban area of Beijing in the Hunan province and in her being promised and then there was a village in which there's all these abandoned kids living in foster family and in the village of 600 family there were 1200 abandoned child living in Foster so you were we were just watching a woman toe betrayed our Hollywood hagalo your tongue photo shoot you she got you in tears her fate hunt you Dada tissue the journey and reading and young got you'll often to see you turn for the Pagani the don't read on just Romanian diuretic true some cheesy Anheuser your toggle you buy one and it was a statistic that we rarely know and according to a governmental report back in 2012 each year there were around a million children were given birth to with birth defects she don't know about hundred centuries that Roshan chair Hojo sutala horomia's Hong jeong-ho bajalia and gold trade are just wrong for sure the power shoulder shoots many anti Yoshi Wang has the bay each year she don't she don't dab of endo shirts and EDA either according to the government report around 30 percent of childs of children in fact died around the town around the time of birth and then there's also a hundred thousand Chapman children Savannah had to be Ichi mania and every year around a hundred thousands children get a pendant you did a lot of this research you know you read these government reports and interviewed people who have had this experience or foster children but in the end all of this sort of documentary research was in the the goal of creating a fictional film where do you and of course your work is known for sort of focusing on sort of social and political issues I'm curious to know you why or you choose to focus on and what role fiction can play in I guess changing people's minds or affecting these certain political issues where documentary can't or is that just where your sensibility lies more with the fictional than the documentary how do you see those two fiction and documentary sort of relating in your work and in your preparation teeka donkey duel I showed on hm Fancher this year Poornima Mira no Fatima hi Nick Toshi you sir Dosher young you gotta do P and P Audra what sistership but Adams on materials P end up here I'm using the standard of documentary and the prospective standard of documentary to make my fictional film including my past film like a courthouse on horseback so you know - sure - sure consultation Yakutia - sure she called Ochoco kosher - Rina you sure so you're the city so you're the Putin Paul Cohen is a Latino Khandala so lemon define you and the fighting gym gratifying for the unifying so that is easier though sure what sue Jean Jojo you should hire phaeton attention even though the film is a fictional narrative but other people's reaction and all the details in other locations in the film including the the police station the hospital and welfare institution all very true and then I used the stand of truth to apply to making this film but have you ever thought about making would you ever have thought about making a documentary about this issue as opposed to a fictional film well you know you term a pike or zero yeah thank you can enjoy a sushi party oniton signature Yoda he got European donítö Tai Chi was couch ha Yin to tezo conquer so he should jungle quote Zhang cancel I can see on TV but European the trans Oh Tobey Marshall jig Athenian true Latrice angle to other yeah you and tryna she'd had a yen you are cheaper hard ocean transition you sure seemed harsh regime cha free energy under your shoes total goons order I personally haven't done any documentary work but then the preparation work for this film exact is in fact not unlike the preparation for documentary in the way of research and aside from the three main actors in the film the recipe our non professional actor acting as himself for example the policeman was actually working as a policeman speaking about the cast and performances it seems it for film was such a powerful sense of realism which is very much documentary like the presence of a big celebrity somebody who's known off screen for their glamour and on screen for they're sort of like incredible sort of like highly produced artifice could be very disruptive to a film like this but young me gives this amazing performance I mean she's almost unrecognizable and it's just such a grounded in such a driving performance how did you how did she become a part of this project and how did you work with her to create this performance that this incredible performance you may sit had an incident oh sure oh shoot trenches - important area so you know in the meantime again you are on transition Tov Etan illumined harmony yeah - da da da da da Huang un trato hecho con casualties really go to noise ratio and a Dakota you mean Nichiren gesture Luke wanna importance to the wanna not usually go to be fine change to Christian any fight on the potential yes a professional actress Yami has a very tight schedule so when she came on the project I told her that list would be a great challenge for you because since the rest of non-professional actors will come out as real in the film but if you come out son real it would become quite a jarring experience so he tied solar and Chong's agenda conquer you sure touchy choo-choo some yarn and go sounding sundown dinner and young touchy murmur - choo-choo choo-choo Charlie got some Hodad Rita so she did a lot of preparation including a lot of research into the texture of so called texture of living of of the people here - what HM she mention me or Congo where she may come with Heidi and appeared as EDA was to our channel hydrology at her she co-wrote Jiujiang Michelle Cunha what you that have four categories tension - sure terminating that room guava English words here and water - dog went wrong Konoe which did Tom O'Connell - yeah me or Chong Ziemba the cashier of a tell me so the highway for English or what is opened up or shows another image or diadochi the octopus ooh yeah so I haven't seen her past work personally but when I first met her she came up as they'd rather have a cat she have a relatively weak and thin physique but also have a stubborn personality which I thought fitted the role and and when the film was screening domestically in China and people knew her star powers that people might have felt that not jarring experience but when the film was screening abroad or for in an audience ship who didn't know about her and people praised the performance that's great an amazing performance I also read that you had sort of treated her a little differently on set than she might have normally been used to treating her like she wasn't allowed to have an entourage or security guards or she was just sort of treated like every other cast member which is not normally how she's treated on bigger productions is that was that the case sure though oh yeah that's true there what do you drilled Honda I've always been harsh on my actors some of the other performances that are really amazing in this film with the father of the child the baby which really we're so were so connected to young means youngmee's characters position and then we're suddenly confronted with the father's position and there's so many other sort of moments in the film where our empathise get confused and turned around and I read in another interview that you gave that you're not so much interested in presenting a specific political or social agenda in the film's report of view but rather expressing confusion and I feel like that's what we get in this film we're presented with so many different perspectives on what to do and how to do it you expand a little bit on that idea about how you express confusion around these social and shoot issues in terms of the preparation of the script and your discussion with your actors and just how you go about creating that sense of confusion capturing it oh sure Walker and aqua like a piranha - sure chicadini can watch again now confirming Singleton's here you dare to tension to go see me Banford yo holla holla fashion - Oh Shi handling - sweetheart from generation pitaka an amoeba see super wanna go jungle 200 earning a yacht Ramona LuAnn draw Rockingham Lea RC - Oliver Tambo Budokan emember human Tamil Telegu tuned here - Takashi on general warrants intro you mean the general a conundrum for push around - sure GCS routine patrol a corporate paper da-da-da potential are they honest ratio how are you gonna do - sure what she sure yeah sure I'd say so logical - of course on wrong way sound routing event either fun to teach without these regeneration there's a whole hour for come and drop without equipment here now it is not an yoni don't you sure you sure about her for the hotel sure Elia other went here tension - sure Kalaheo truly go shoot through some - sure that Aaron from Virginia is young cursory Sahar's Rio Negro Europa CNO not sure - hallelujah leshawna the pusher generally I show you later - sweetie see she don't eat ozawa no remember OPC da you sure you sure thought you had a union diner so the confusion you saw in the film was also my personal conundrum while making the film and on one hand campaigned to my past film this film has a lot more explanation and exposition and pilot reason why is that the audience audience in China dong we're not familiar with this issue partially because the government probably did not want to kind of promote this kind of issue so they're unfamiliar with the issue so I have to do more exposition on the other hand also underwent a personal personal journey to kind of pinpoint the root cause and the resolution of the issue I was presenting in the film but I found myself unable to do so and one of the conundrum what a social conundrum was sad as the social welfare and health care progresses in China and more children start to actually recover with insurance but you would expect that more less children who get abandon when in fact a figure has been increasing so I personally cannot pinpoint the root cause either way on Chiyoko no I'm sure well hard you should try and hone the yeah you may wanna gonna - sure drunk or you're - morini don't wanna injure a young girl found long to return to Marie young you Sahara Natasha Shiva - hi Zanna your home in your jungle eating your that she'll order sure your non-electrical this year so you know the item nitro Hanako noona yogurt Angie de has a you - sure Kanaan - sure - sure pasando Xie what you joke with harder and Eliza Cano with with a mosquito Yaya Kuno and perhaps this is also about cultural norms for Chinese family for most of them raising a child is a sort of a retirement plan you expect the child to be a healthy and smart individual who can take care of you when you're old for them having achieved a child with disability who need to be cared for as opposed to someone who can care for the parents would be a disadvantage so in Asia mania and till the ornament or the doji that I'm done it's hanji the highest ji who may or pay neat feature chatting shop initial yonder so he is higher you go conundrum for me Baffert I only got Geum Ran's oh that's also why orphans with disability were rarely adopted by other family and first they have to go into foster care in a government-sponsored program so yeah yeah sure Yoji human to change the Toland oh thank god San Sebastian Congo now who can you go to Andrew : we come to other way we'll gender ticka ticka ticka new hydro-zone hardly be a tension who can what that room go financial childish work NGO controller and told Toby chanting has the Fuji Libya salmon which other chicken you had the talk when censure Tamandua Jake Charlie younger clicker hi solutions to the Chinese English language auditioning for Tina he went away I only order sha-na-na portion need the new Buchi food and Uribe the jihad her so when the film was screened in abroad for example in Toronto and since passion since Sebastian audience mostly identify with the protagonists and the child and the baby but when I screened the film in China the audience in fact mostly identified with the father most of them think that the protagonist was meddling in something that's none of her business and the father had the right to decide the fate of the child and most audience also think that also questioned if the protagonist youngmee wasn't gonna take care of the child for the rest of her recipe its life why should she be meddling with other people's business I have a couple more questions and I'll turn it over to the audience I was it's another major figure in film well I mean just film history that's in this film is hosho Shan is an executive producer on the film Taiwanese director you know certified master how did he become involved in this project and what was it like working with him this is the first time you would work with him and what was it like working with pusher Bobby Jo she parenting Union contingent or what you and Rania even issue her a PG basic code change issue to ensure torture torture kadachan honey hot water ah-ho-ho lightning girl in Chania had to an inner circle such tradition initials that are Luda so the piratical remain a giant jerk regime trapeze and I come to Atocha what other so in the oh sure sure before open corner with a yo eating watching Empire who does the little higher quadriyyah go see the humane what a painting options for a hotel tap is young like more highway I want Halle knee yeah I'm sure honey I wouldn't have put out your passion motherhood or pager neva yo pal holla holla at your serene young Sahana Shanta Madonna or sure just a me o fair girl Shanna to Moore's when you're shining a diluted ripieno Sheila Hoda robust in history at all yeah sure he visitation center so Hollywood so what what's a monkey need an changer Tommy when she and a warrior kid need an changer so I knew how assumptions he very well and one of my our past cooperation was back in 2000 when I was making Beijing bicycle and then a new action new has team pretty well and both the editor and the sound person were from Hassan's the team on Beijing bicycle and then fast forward to the Sasson I was actually doing most of the work associated with an executive producer in mainland China for the film assassin which is directed by Hassan and and then in fact Jose Sheehan had a cameo in my film young style and he was in fact visiting the mainland to discuss not associated with assassin and then on that day we didn't have any shooting schedule so I just asked him to do a cameo in the young style and and in the end after all the work I've done for this Dawson hosin insisted that I be credited as a producer even though I would have been pretty happy with just like a mainland producer but instead he credited me as an exactly producer and then I said to him actually he said he offered to be a producer on my film too return the favor so that's how it came to be so um last question I hope it's not too big or abstract a question but do you think that film in China or elsewhere especially acknowledging that maybe Chinese audiences had different responses to this film that safe you know foreign language audiences ad do you think that film or what role can film play in changing social policies or political you know situations you think film has a role to play and can it play that role in in China what you the team yoga from go around the T Pharma Oh watch it Darin - sure Jennifer woman song sure doncha Jana canal - sure that way your protein shake ocean trying to conjure Terrence and I know sure she's harder to home now why should she all your ETA you sent you to either the title with you she was in Soho I do things film have that function and in the past especially in in a country like China where in the past films function as propaganda and since recently film been commercialized I think there needs to be a space need to be feel we're realists work can exist which is what we see Jo Jo Jo Jo Jo Jeeta ginger and Romeo hana yo titled Romeo you may look oh yeah sure even if I indiscernible - UNH - away - on Dodgers even peonage or sure shoot aha ah ho even with your Delaware Hawaii is you ginger horn either way candidate aliens you shoulda saw her I think realism is important and working hard toward speaking of truth it's very important to me and if I tell lies right now looking back at it ten years later it would be a joke questions from the audience we have mics on either side so we'll bring them to you but let's go right in the middle here yeah wait for the mic to come up you tighten your ha some argument is your shirt on you connect with other no Quincy Tico's wanted on two other Europeans anemia no time now face each other booyah a tea for me your tea sure you go to a surgeon to have some cultures in a meeting cha championship maybe I'll shoot you sure in some don't say - sure neither can i - sure you could send the symphony teams harder Jessica piensa dijo and sat down and IPIN the argument in a gesture her hotel to attend Joe Quincy to show potential Dakota non-drunk way to teach Heyerdahl beautiful piensa en duda Wan Jia - Tom I should say home in the TNT - all the Hawaiian is Jenny Roger dama dama Oh see ya I'm sorry appear can you translate the questions yeah so - part 1 part is about working with non-professional actor especially the policemen who play a big role in the film the second question is about the role of Jose Sheehan behind the scene how he provided advice or any yeah you may eat chairwoman hi Damien Doha to Qin Qiong hua Jiao is yeah - sure victory at the sturm Johnson Yoga tension away Janet he way not yours from your natural Tama Poonam GP oh yeah Nippon aa new jolly good you should be found each other you got game the fine you and Tiago Geum JA Holden irani good young Haryana go finding you and JJ go team sure away oh you went either so I have used non professional actor it extensively in the past and one reflection that I had was that you cannot ask non professional actor to performs as someone else for example you cannot ask the policemen to perform as a film projector and vice-versa you may commence tripping on how are you gonna do tripping on github and Hisle you mean you can tell at Heights the road iup it has four triggers ratio Jolla ii secondly you cannot feed them lines when she feet on line the performance becomes fake so you know it should be partial negative harder order she she should hire should be and usually year so because the policemen improvise some of his lines he is almost the case that he could be credited as a screenwriter so he this year nature you sure be harsh or not theater power Fujio ponder gentleman here guys are my true de jong huge honor for haha Tiffany Williams ulama t-shirt she's your daughter she's negative huh cause water so for every steps of the police procedures including receiving and report and dispatching the car and then dealing with the case all that kind of that changed the event we're all taught to me by the policemen so you sure miss time y'all try I got you a soda from Jojo got some hot room change that you got us a hot youth out this year and burrata cheese in June colleague oh oh can I go team can use your one shampoo park jinan go handsome son or disease okay Ella yes so whenever I have a road to fit I would go out to find the right person in the in the actual row for example for the policeman and went to find many policemen actually and see which which of them feel most comfortable in from the camera well quick a hotel can't you borrow on just your Genji bamberd Hayakawa sure your hotel is usually hotel sure you go a transient you don't have a team - sure sure sure sure - Italian description so you can assure me when hi general not just a bikini - TV easier even hundred initiative inertia so it had away and tension terrible yoshiyama control divergent sure Donna how do we continue to weigh them Janet you away fit handsome Shonda to knowledge further Giorgio just a either the honey to TV wake and horse Ossian read the script also watched the many version of my draft cuts but he believed in or tourism where the director is in charge of filmmaking so he doesn't give specific or concrete advice but he does offer his own personal reflection and thoughts which sort of kind of went off on his own and not necessarily to film any more questions let's go over here on this side here you right there yeah I'm Diana how we cook when you each should see the wind to share or to eat our chicken juice - oh gosh oh you're eating in the rule to the tummy oh that's my Wendy ha ha Tyra is a treasure so it concussions Oh quantity and we wouldn't put sufu I'm sure even in your pantry Italia what sun is shining just take a stranger shinning towing a pin cheetah yo 30 nations hash Roger yeah it's time you like Turkish answer yummy one touch a room y'all seen the Phantom but daily shall we audience hula with Romanova tribution in that you burn yourself you're attached them into 2004 war your heart is it knows so I have a question about the character design to be honest at the beginning I felt a little bit uncomfortable about this character its performance because she never said hello excuse me or anything like that I thought she was kind of rude and my question is did you decide on that consciously as a screenwriter and the director or that the actress also make a decision on that Thank You Katya Katya so - sure sure - did you search it really dolly go and Adam and he - sure you initial reporting that Junkers and B end up on your team tension Symbian upon IANA top was young she sure you go you had which you can be a janitor you treaty and I show the wanna who watching jet jet - sure what do an actual man colada you mean what you don't - sure was with Asiana Roku upon Ariana chicken ha what yes you wish you go and appear in the show so I face a big challenge in my characters design and as I retold the story to friends around me and none of them find it believable finally believe about that young woman would try to meddle in other people's business this is hard for me because I personally would meddle in other people's business in her place yeah so this is a big problem for me so you hold on now wheeler schrieffer was so you're the kyndra kyndra - sure Timoshenko sure that is here Paloma why were Shauna Naru quoi Jake Anu has the appetite sawmill not really you Darwin Tina so almost in an effort to convince my friends who were giving feedback to me I I kind of ponder on the idea that way if the the young woman was not a clever woman or if she has some sort of halves of disadvantage intellectually would it become more believable you may know am I sure - sure sure may your energy Berta sure unique oh we're truth you gotta come - oh we didn't actually follow any formal script who are shooting a film in fact the only thing we had was a 5 page outline so yeah yeah she our papa Yatta Yatta Rana was Janice young oh yeah mayor young Chico Sonia meet Ronnie and she could to do and either hell so we adjusted while I was shooting and I do not have the courage to explicitly say to young me that her character was mentally challenged so you know woman Romeo that you can should assure her just repetition filming but that she from DMI then this year your your how to order she said yeah she should though they aren't sure how to do and here so we did not explicitly make that clear in the film but there are many details hiding in the film that points to the fact that she might be mentally challenged eventually yeah but yeah but yeah but these fusion yeah by the Dear John little yeah but hydrogen her for sure and you know Japan as a teacher Johanna casual Buchi the abakan her foolish or yodeling drawn shot cheaper natural isla Georgia from eating shark I'm a possible so one of the hint was the conversation with shall jean her friend where shall gene urge her to get a certificate of disability and telling her anecdote were one of the normal person cannot perform mental disability in order get a certificate so the subtext her was had why don't you who in fact have mental disability to get a certificate Loyola champion - were holding that Renoir champion Oahu in burning a medium woman of forty Bowman relish and Oakland Thomas I'm Jennifer Tommy and Joe Trudeau I see a measure the undergo should actually open his eyes you mean Tommy Ortega jr. I mean eager to sure maybe I can change and you had a non-jew sent young transitioned the your trio younger y'all put your show true leader you put your agenda so so while the film was going through a censorship system in China it went through the Civil Ministry and welfare social welfare institutions and the staff there recognized immediately that the protagonist was mentally challenged because they were the new the system very well they knew that in order to get a certificate of disability who are having a seemingly able body in China the only two ways first if you have mental illness and then it's the mental disability sutra shangela yeah sure thing Thu the house yeah sure truly meant either to worship or is required agree she heard and in fact the story sounds very tragic it's as if pointing to the fact that if you weren't mentally challenged you were not gonna medoh4 costly so you believe in China I want to sort of steal a question back and just ask about character design but in relation to her friend or her deaf friend who both sort of tells her what she's doing is wrong but then also allows her to facilitate you know her plan at one point driving her to the hospital to kidnap the baby but I was also particularly one of my favorite scenes in the film is when they're having she's having dinner with him and her and his deaf friends and they're all around the table together like in in just one of the briefest shortest scenes in the film you just get this really strong sense of just how warm and caring and strong this community of people are who have been otherwise sort of shut out of mainstream society and we're just at that dinner table like for just a few minutes can you talk a little bit about well I guess there's two questions how her friend the deaf friends character developed in this process of you know when you were working without a script but also the shooting of that scene and how that scene sort of came about because just such an amazing moment in the film Theodosia Eber pie delivery of the fragility of to be a hollow he means each other sure her such impartially and he go study humans each other's Rene was supernaturally ego ego ego changed page Giada ego Sharma Pechanga you go you go show her llegando Thank You Holly whoa fashion English a harsh touch with answer to memorize juntos en team some velocity so Helana yo certainly toe Ondo Havana hurts hi Roger de navarra´ pasanda so you wanna go to the interior surface I do sir yog indya tension - Rico Thailand annual kayo feat hyung-jun Donny god I wanna Korea what your show buddy off so he was her was her own agenda she Yabba so the character design in fact shifted as we shot the film originally the character of surgeon was performed by someone who actually had mobile disability but toward the end I the film was almost finished and I thought that he really could not be himself in the front of a camera so I changed actor and hire the hong-chih who is a Taiwanese actor and because he has a very thick torinese accent which I really could not stand so I made him into a shape shape him into a deaf character very practical decision then on that point but thick but but that but that scene of the of him and the other his other you know friends who are also deaf I mean is so real it feels so human that that moment you may need her to rot how many are interventions here the Dosher dosha gender no area so aside from those two actors the rest of the people actually um death so we've time for one more question sorry about that so let's go right here in the I guess uh yeah right there in back hi I'm so I just have a few questions so at the first one I speaking of accent I'm really interested in accent of young me because she's you you talk you direct her to speak an axiom which is not um the standardized mentoring rather is a dialogue and I wonder why did you do that and because sometimes when she's speaking I just feel kind of weird on the unnatural because sometimes she's just always switch back to the standardized mentoring and um as for the second question I noticed that in the beginning of the film that the film is a bit lower exposure and I wonder why did you do that and you use a little available light a lot and are you trying to emulate a sense of reality through the available hour explosion light and as for the third question and I'm sorry it's okay and so it's just okay I'm gonna translate to you do you might just the Box GT going to justice an onion shot you might say luckily vlogging impinge on how I like a young me it has shot a cow in Priscilla just turn like a chunk order put on harder like a cow in LA Joe Toft sue saw the sukkah Fung and that's it eyes I saw a funky initial how tada La Juicy ty oh sorry way and puts it and just you you saw a and Belgian harder we don't have a coding the hallways and when I just wish my aunt valia openings you should put her English and I got and or the jungle lynching and um and though dominoes that I sure like don't I rather than Funyun going is what fashion is an NPN unconscious how passes y es en su cool powder Louis and when Sally don't go about that Julie supposes sound choo-choo-choo-choo capture a chance you just to pour joy using machines horizontal no just conjured documentary like and others in t-loop Ian's like that young gangjae yeah no sure you gotta in the control you mean Luke or your shirts I sent around your meet young hardening apple trees in debating wahdahu shoboyatta what washer watches open opposition seein -
