[Music] how soft this feels rough as we touch we find out more about the world we discover texture in school in our art class A teacher sometimes selects a few material for us to touch bumpy cardboard cloth fur and other everyday materials by feeling we learn more about texture some things are soft or rough some things are smooth and others scratchy or bumpy some things are softer or rougher than others as we become more aware of texture we will choose more carefully the ones we want to use for a design if we close our eyes we are able to know many things only by the way they feel by their texture we help the teacher to collect materials of different colors textures and patterns today the teacher has got out just textured materials for us to choose from there are fine and coarse Nets from vegetable sacks rough burlap and smooth fabrics bumpy packing papers and egg crate dividers Rubber and small things like feathers bits of bark and wood shavings everybody comes to choose what he would like to put together for his collage whenever we find something interesting we bring it into our collection and put it in the right box some of us already have an idea others get their ideas from the materials each one of us takes the size and color of paper or cardboard he wants to use as a background now we are ready to go to work we have worked with many art materials and have made collages before so we know how to start all we need now is scissors and some paste the French word for paste is La that's where the name collage comes from each person Works in his own way Lizzy who is five did not plan beforehand what she was going to do she takes the small pieces of materials she liked and pastes them on the paper and so her design grows L who is seven had decided to make a lady she wants certain shapes so she cuts them with scissors she doesn't paste right right away but Waits until the arrangement satisfies her she develops her idea as she works well here is more room why not make it two ladies two ladies getting dressed to go out Lisa has already cut out some shapes that she wants and is now arranging them she is working out a design which doesn't represent anything yet she places her shapes very thoughtfully in some cases a stapler works better than paste there is one for all of us to share Jones said she is going to make a fierce animal chasing a dog even the sun is black she said because everyone is scared now she needs something to make a tree well there is always more material to choose from on the choosing table maybe this yarn will do Dan decided to make a design with very simple shapes of different textures he likes the coarse thick feeling of the carpet trimmings he found this smooth soft velvet will contrast with the rough and bumpy materials Steve started with shapes of canvas and paper and then he discovered that the netting lets you see what's underneath even when it is in several layers at first it was difficult to see what he had in mind but the way he arranged his colors and shapes made in the end a beautiful design the teacher knows what everyone is doing but she never tells anyone exactly what to do she points out how well Judy filled the space with unusual materials in her collage of two children playing in the park the teacher is always ready to give encouragement and help and often asks a question which helps us to get new ideas Billy wants help do you want to look for some more material often when we don't know how to go on going back to the choosing table helps us to decide what to do Billy found what he liked and when he finished a large piece of orange Bel completed the pattern made by the small pieces when Joan finished her Fierce animal chasing a dog the teacher told her how well she had chosen her materials but isn't this part a little too empty no Joan didn't agree this is just just the way she wanted it at the end we want to see what everyone has done so we put up one finished collage by each child here is a collage without a background it is a man on skates Lizzy used so many soft bumpy pieces we want to [Music] [Music] touch here is Lisa's design Des all [Music] finished Michael made a man going upstairs with sailor hats falling down the stairs L's two ladies are now all ready to go out [Music]
