30th Annual College Royal

[Music] College Royal activity at the OAC gets underway each year with the crowning of the college Royal Queen who is chosen from among the girls on the campus this year hurt and pretty Joan Gallagher a third-year McDonald Institute student was crowned Queen by Bing Whitaker of the CBC at the college royal ball on Saturday February 27th mayor Harry Warton of gell presented Joan with a bouquet of roses while the five other Queen candidates looked on the college Royal Queen is selected on the basis of her appearance personality and all round campus activity among the many visitors to the college Royal are groups of high school students who are invited from the area this year even with the inclement weather which college Royal experienced over 250 students attended the show on Wednesday March 3rd and were taken on conducted tours of the campus in the arena Dr JD McLaughlin president of the OAC introduced Deputy minister of Agriculture CD Graham who officially opened College Royal Mr Graham expresses his good wishes to the many contestants participating in the Showmanship one of the eight swine Showmanship classes is watched intently by the crowd of Spectators present be animals as well as Horses sheep and dairy cattle are also shown here agie students stand their animals correctly for the appraisal of the judges exhibitors are judged on their ability to prepare an animal for the show ring and the ability with which they show the animal in the ring the confirmation of the animals does not enter into the the judge's decisions most of the students work for several weeks preparing and training their entry the dog show is a popular division of the royal with girls and many of them participated Suzanne Morrow of Canadian figure skating Fame shows her German Shepherd in Massie Hall entries in the visual arts division of college Royal were displayed these included photographs and handicrafts produced by the students among the handicraft items were minutely detailed models of wagons leathercraft in the form of purses and wallets and carving and etching such as found in this brass tray artwork is also entered by the students oil paintings watercolors and pencil drawings made up the art display this section was very popular with the women visitors to the Royal a puppet show for the entertainment of visitors was put on by the students this was a new feature at College Royal and was enjoyed by all who saw the puppets going through their Antics a demonstration of Ceramics and leather working was also inaugurated this year such features as this and many others which are new to college Royal are definitely on the agenda to stay here a student of the associate course demonstrates leather staining technique first prize on the way to Memorial trophy for the student Club exhibits Was Won by the poultry science club with its exhibit on Canada's growing Broiler industry the Agronomy Club was second with an exhibit on corn and horticulture's Apple display won third place over in Memorial Hall a feature for the women was the fashion show McDonald Institute students presented the show completely organized by themselves and displayed clothes with which they themselves made here students model a navy and white checked Viola flannel house coat and a denim sports outfit one of our College Royal Queen candidates models a velvetine jumper these clothes are all made in the sewing classes which the McDonald Institute girls receive in their regular curriculum College Royal Queen Joan Gallagher finds time in her busy tour of beauty to model a short formal of brown and white dotted Swiss a capacity audience attends the fashion show every year at the Royal another feature provided by the girls on the campus is the McDonald Institute division in which the girls compete in cooking classes with a great variety of delicious looking food brand muffins cakes and apple pies are admired by Spectators with wetted appetites Cloverleaf buns and numerous other items of food were prepared by the girls in their cooking Laboratories and judged for all the quality ities of Fine Food a special class for boys in which chocolate layer cakes were made received a lot of attention by visitors the winning cake is in the left foreground the girls also held food demonstrations which women visitors enjoyed greatly methods of cooking and preparing food as well as interesting ways of serving food were demonstrated McDonald Institute division comprises a large portion of college Royal and gives the girls an opportunity to take part in many ways in the 5-day show back to the livestock again students are shown leading their dairy cows from the barn to the show ring our high school visitors took quite an interest in this part of the show after the champions in each class of livestock have been selected a grand champion livestock Showmanship class is held in this class each contestant is required to prove his ability to show not only his own entry but the four other classes as well Grand Champion livestock showman is the most coveted award and here Professor rby presents the prize to Bertram Stewart a second-year associate student from Bolton Ontario many enthusiastic friends congratulate B on his achievement they watch him demonstrate his versatility and Showmanship with one of the other classes the climax of college Royal came with a combination variety and awards night at which Bert Stewart received his Grand Champion livestock Showmanship cup Professor Knox who obtained the most points in overall College Royal competition in conjunction with the awards program is the variety show show in which the audience enjoyed comedy music dancing and song Here is a sample of the dance routines can can kick line tap dancing and
