[1963 STATE VISIT OF CZECH PRESIDENT ANTONIN NOVOTNY TO INDONESIA]

Genre: home movie

Description: This fascinating 8mm home movie shows images from a diplomatic visit to Asia by Czechoslovakian President Antonin Novotny. At the time his official designation was the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. It's not exactly clear what year these images were captured, but we believe it is almost certainly 1963 as he is known to have visited Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and North Vietnam in January of that year. The film begins with images (possibly shot in Indonesia but it's not clear) starting with a little boy 0:05 looking at the cameraman. At :24 part of the delegation is seen walking with a group of locals, at :50 what appears to be a Hudson Hornet drives along a jungle road. Images shot from the rear of a car show rice paddies, and pedestrians carrying various items. At 1:07, a Convair 240 airplane from Garuda Indonesian Airways is on the tarmac, waiting for the Presidential party to arrive. Repairs or adjustments are made to the rear door at 1:28. At 1:31, a welcome sign at the Tuban Airport (now known as Denpasar International Airport or I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport) for the President and his party. At 1:40 the control tower is seen. At 1:44, an escort of Fouga CM.170 Magisters flies with the plane as an escort. At 2:00, arrival in Cambodia, probably at Phnom Penh Airport. At 2:30, view of massed troops along the roadside from inside a moving car. Also shots of a apartment buildings and stores.
