Description: Dating to 1949 and released by Encyclopedia Britannica films in the USA and Cinesound in Australia, "Thrills of the Surf" examines the popular sport of surfing (:07). It opens with a shot of the coastline with the city wrapping around the sandy shoreline, possibly Melbourne or Sydney (:32) as surfers take to the waves (:39). Surfing is considered to be one of Australia’s most popular sports (:46). Youth of Australia run to the waters edge with large rubber boats tumbling under the rolling waves as the boats flip over (:59). Mothers and young children walk into rock pools (1:52). 7,000 make up the Life Savers (2:15); comprised of male and female (2:22) volunteers. The volunteers march as bag pipes encourage them forward. This event is known as the Grand March (2:38). A high step is used to move through the soft sand with ease (2:44). Australians push surf boards and ski’s through the surf (3:00). A few are able to rise from their boards as waves form and crash (3:07). These were traditionally used for by the Life Savers to patrol the waters (3:23) in order to warn civilians of sharks or to rescue those in need. Close shots of surfers standing on their boards follows (4:07). One surfer steers his surf board away from rocks in the waters (4:41). Another crashes under the waves as boards hit him and the life savers rush out in a rescue attempt (5:10). [Music] [Music] pounded by rollers straight from four oceans the beaches of australia are truly a surfer's paradise surfing is australia's most popular sport and on a summer's day hundreds of thousands go down to the sea [Music] young australia is keen on surfing too but it doesn't take its pleasures too seriously they'll try anything with these war surplus rubber boats no skill is necessary to get in or out all it takes is nerve these kids are out for fun and no amount of upsets will dampen their enthusiasm even if that's the only thing that doesn't get dampened this is one way of really getting to know the tricky nature of the surf so let's leave them to manage as best they can [Music] in rock pools and sheltered places the sea is kind and gentle a children's playground a golden sun warmed playground [Music] but here is play of a more serious sort to guard those who go searching for thrills and the hazards of the open surf are 7 000 lifesavers among them are some of the world's best swimmers and that goes for the girls too they are all organized in volunteer clubs their carnivals like this one here today are a test of endurance skill and courage this is the grand march prelude to a day of thrills that high step is no affectation it's the easiest way of marching in soft sand try it yourself and see [Music] it is hard work getting surfboard and skis out through the breaking surf unlike the surf in hawaii the australian surf is usually steep and often rough the waves roll in straight from the open sea [Music] only the most skillful riders can keep their balance boards and skis are used by lifesavers to patrol beyond the last line of breakers ready to give shark warnings or to rescue surfers who venture too far but what risk can be great enough to mar the thrill of riding like this it takes long experience to become a champion and all are not champions racing toward the beach on a summer day is the great moment in any surfer's dream [Music] a bad wave but he rides it balancing with only the tail of his board speed the speed that comes from training and nerve is the ultimate thrill of every participant [Music] some keep close to rocky headlands which divide one beach from the other steering their frail craft at frightening speed through narrow channels between the rocks but disaster strikes quickly [Music] the boards hit him lifesavers on duty have seen his signal for help they go into fast action in a nasty sea in heavy surf like this a strong lifeline is an essential part of their equipment the injured man his shoulder broken is brought ashore skilled hands render first aid but here is the big time australia's volunteer coast guard battling through the breakers with crews straining at the oars it is a job for tough men surf boats are built to a unique design they are light but strong and need all their strength as they mount the steep sided waves and thump on their keels in the following trough [Music] this wave is dangerous abandoned ship deserting may not look heroic but it is common sense a flying ore or the heavy boat itself could crush a man in a split second [Music] in a surf boat race there is no other prize than the satisfaction of being first home it's training for rescue work [Music] it's thrilling but it's no pleasure crew [Music] it's a trial of strength a test of training and endurance [Music] in spite of swampings collisions and near disaster some boats manage to break through and head for the beach together water waves and sunshine have joined forces to make surfing australia's national sport [Music] you
