Explores the themes and brief historical background up to 1942 of the movement in American literature away from New England. Describes the movement as involving most of the American authors, such as Cooper, Hawthorne, and Melville, who looked to the past and to Europe. Contrasts such authors as Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Sherwood Anderson, John Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James T. Farrell, William Faulkner, and Nathaniel West who, no longer interested in Europe, drew upon the people of America for material in their novels.
