Christopher Wood steht kurz vor der Abschlussprüfung des Gymnasiums. Er ist einer der besten Schüler seiner Klasse. Seine Zeugnisse sind gut. Doch plötzlich gerät er in eine Krise. Er will nicht mehr auf der Schule bleiben. 'Schule ist Erpressung', meint er, 'nur wenn man ein Abschlusszeugnis hat , kriegt man einen Job.' Christophers Freundin Joan, eine Mitschülerin, kann ihm nicht helfen, auch die Mutter nicht. Mit den Lehrern und dem Direktor zu sprechen, hat für Christopher schon gar keinen Zweck. Sie stehen ja auf der 'anderen Seite'. Christopher wehrt sich verzweifelt gegen die etablierten Formen der Gesellschaft. Er weiß keinen Ausweg. Das Ende des Films bleibt offen. Christopher ist einer der besten seiner Klasse. Doch plötzlich gerät er in eine Krise. Seine Vorstellungen und Bedürfnisse lassen sich nicht mit der Schulrealität vereinbaren. Man sieht Christopher geistesabwesend die Schulstunden absitzen. Mit kurzen Sequenzen wird dem Zuschauer Christophers Vorstellungswelt vergegenwärtigt: In einem fiktiven Prozess halten die Schüler Gericht über den Geschichtslehrer, er wird beschuldigt, die Schüler gelangweilt zu haben. In Wunschträumen schwärmt Christopher von trauten Stunden mit seiner Freundin Joan. Während der Geschichtslehrer über die Christianisierung referiert, assoziiert Christopher die blutige Niederschlagung einer Demonstration. Je stärker Christophers emotionale Ablehnung wird, desto größer werden seine Schwierigkeiten, mit den ihm nahestehenden Personen über seine Situation zu sprechen und so seine Krise zu überwinden. Sein letzter Versuch, beim Schulpsychologen sich auszusprechen, scheitert. Die letzte Einstellung des Films verdeutlicht nochmals symbolisch Christophers psychischen Zustand: gehetzt läuft er durch die endlosen Straßen der Großstadt. Christopher Wood is about to take his final exams at grammar school. He is one of the best pupils in his class. His grades are good. But suddenly he finds himself in a crisis. He no longer wants to stay at school. 'School is blackmail,' he says, 'you can only get a job if you have a certificate.' Christopher's girlfriend Joan, a fellow pupil, can't help him, nor can his mother. Talking to the teachers and the principal is of no use to Christopher. After all, they are on the 'other side'. Christopher desperately resists the established forms of society. He knows no way out. The end of the movie remains open. Christopher is one of the best in his class. But suddenly he finds himself in a crisis. His ideas and needs cannot be reconciled with the reality of school. Christopher is seen absent-mindedly sitting through his lessons. Short sequences bring Christopher's imaginary world to the viewer's attention: In a fictitious trial, the pupils hold court over the history teacher; he is accused of having bored the pupils. In daydreams, Christopher raves about spending romantic hours with his girlfriend Joan. While the history teacher talks about Christianization, Christopher associates it with the bloody suppression of a demonstration. The stronger Christopher's emotional rejection becomes, the greater his difficulties in talking to those close to him about his situation and thus overcoming his crisis. His last attempt to talk to the school psychologist fails. The last shot of the film once again symbolically illustrates Christopher's mental state: he is rushing through the endless streets of the big city.
