Auf einem unbebauten Grundstück inmitten einer Berliner Wohngegend, das voll Gerümpel ist, haben sich die Kinder Felix, Sascha, Regina und Astrid ein Spielhaus gebaut. Beim Spielen im Haus und auf dem Grundstück entstehen Konflikte in der Kindergruppe als Folge der kindlichen Auseinandersetzung mit den aufgetretenen Problemen, die durch Wasser, Luft, Müll und Umweltgestaltung thematisiert werden. Es wird deutlich, wie die Kinder auf ihre eigene Art und Weise mit den Problemen umgehen und wie sie dabei auch die sozialen Konflikte untereinander lösen. Ein Bezug zu entsprechenden 'großen' Umweltproblemen wird jeweils über eine überzeichnende Fantasieszene hergestellt. Sascha, Astrid, Felix und Regina haben sich auf einem unbebauten Grundstück ein Spielhaus gebaut. Auch an eine Feuerstelle haben sie gedacht. Astrid hat Bockwürstchen gekauft, die sie zusammen mit den anderen am offenen Feuer braten möchte. Der Film zeigt die Kinder beim Feuer machen. Zunächst versuchen sie mit Holz und Zeitungspapier das Feuer zu entfachen. Doch das Feuer will nicht brennen. Nun werfen sie Plastiktüten, Joghurtbecher und sogar einen alten Fahrradschlauch hinein. Zwar lodert jetzt die Flamme, doch es entsteht heftiger Qualm und Gestank. Dennoch halten die Kinder ihre Würstchen zum Braten ins Feuer. Als die Kinder zu husten beginnen, entschließt sich Sascha, die am meisten stinkenden Dinge wieder aus dem Feuer zu holen. Zwei Kinder vom Nachbargrundstück beschweren sich über den Gestank. Patzig entgegnet Astrid, dass die Luft allen gehöre und dass sie deshalb auch Feuer machen könnten. Sascha, Regina und Felix suchen für das schwach brennende Feuer nach weiterem Brennmaterial. Astrid fischt währenddessen weiter die stinkenden Plastikteile aus dem Feuer. Sie kommt auf den Gedanken, dass die Nachbarkinder eigentlich doch recht haben; denn sie selbst möchte auch nicht in Gestank und Qualm spielen. Als sie ihre Würstchen aus dem Feuer holt, stellt sie fest, dass sie stinken. Der abschließende fantastische Teil des Films illustriert Astrids Vision, wie es wäre, wenn die Luft immer so stinken würde, dass alle Menschen Gasmasken tragen müssten. First they try to start the fire with wood and newspaper. But the fire does not want to burn. Now they throw plastic bags, yogurt cups and even an old bicycle inner tube into it. Although the flame now blazes, it produces heavy smoke and stench. Nevertheless, the children hold their sausages to roast in the fire. When the children start coughing, Sascha decides to take the most smelly things out of the fire again. Two children from the neighboring plot complain about the stench. Astrid snottily replies that the air belongs to everyone and that they can therefore make fires. Sascha, Regina and Felix look for more fuel for the weakly burning fire. Meanwhile, Astrid continues to fish the stinking plastic pieces out of the fire. It occurs to her that the neighboring children are actually right, because she herself doesn't want to play in the stench and smoke. When she takes her sausages out of the fire, she realizes that they stink. The final fantastic part of the film illustrates Astrid's vision of what it would be like if the air always stank so badly that everyone had to wear gas masks.
