Various examples are used to illustrate friendships between boys and girls that are met with varying degrees of understanding or incomprehension in their parents' homes. Alternative ways for parents to behave are shown; the commentary clearly warns against certain parenting mistakes: excessive strictness, laissez-faire, narcissistic projection. Positive parenting styles are based - according to the film's tenor - essentially on mutual trust.
