The re-education films in the 'Zeit im Film' series did not explore the causes of National Socialism; instead, they consistently focused on the future, on learning and relearning democratic behaviors. However, democracy is rarely presented through its organizational principles such as free elections and the separation of powers; democracy is limited to the active participation of citizens in shaping their immediate environment and to a changed form of opinion-forming. Discussion is thus addressed as a new mindset, the basic rules of which, such as tolerance, can be learned at an educational institution in Marbach, for example. The aim is to examine all sides of an issue so that each individual can form their own opinion: 'Listen to many views and involve many people in the process.' '...and what do you think?' from 1950 presents these basic rules of discussion in detail, linking them to German traditions such as the Marburg Religious Colloquy of 1529. The role of Professor Müller is played by the German philosopher and educator Fritz Karsch (1893–1971), who taught at Matsue High School (now Shimane University) from 1925 to 1939 and is still highly revered in Japan today.
