Description: 16mm Film - Sleeping Beauty - USA ~1950 Directed by: George Freedland Written by: Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault and Kenneth Brodney Cinematography by: Peter Levent and S. Jegoudez Music by: Ivan Semenoff et al. Starring: Julie Gibson, Roland Pilain's Children's Theatre aka Le Théâtre des enfants de Roland Pilain (Paris) et al. ussian-born director George(s) Freedland, who emigrated to the USA for several years during the occupation of his adopted country of France, made this short film 'Sleeping Beauty', which was previously thought to be lost, as part of the series 'The World's Great Fairytales' alongside 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. In addition to the well-known American actress Julie Gibson as the narrator, this fairytale play was performed exclusively by members of the ensemble of the 'Théâtre des enfants de Roland Pilain (Paris)'. I therefore assume that the main part of the film was shot in France and only the framing story with Julie Gibson was shot in the USA. Particularly noteworthy is the musical use of a theremin, which was usually only used in science fiction and horror films in the 1950s.
