Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht die Ritterweihe mit dem Rittergelöbnis des 18jährigen Wolfram von Scharfenfels. Eingerahmt wird diese Symbolhandlung von der Darstellung der wechselseitigen Bedeutung des Lehnsverhältnisses: Müssen zu Filmbeginn die Bauern ihre Lehnsabgaben für die Feier auf der Burg entrichten, so unterbrechen sie zum Schluss das Festtagsmahl und bitten die Ritter um Hilfe, da ihr Dorf überfallen und niedergebrannt wird. Drehorte waren die Marksburg über Braubach am Rhein und die Burg Rapottenstein bei Linz in Österreich. This symbolic act is framed by the depiction of the reciprocal significance of the feudal relationship: while at the beginning of the film the peasants have to pay their feudal dues for the celebration at the castle, at the end they interrupt the feast and ask the knights for help because their village is being attacked and burned down.
