Der mit dem Oskar ausgezeichnete Kurzspielfilm 'Nur Kost und Logis' handelt von zwei behinderten jungen Menschen mit Down-Syndrom. Der Film tritt ein für ihr Recht auf Partnerschaft und Liebe und zeigt die Reaktionen und Bewertungen ihrer Umwelt. In der Lehrwerkstatt eines Behindertenheimes unterhalten sich einige Mädchen über ihre Wünsche und Träume. Die 16-jährige Lila kam mit Down-Syndrom zur Welt. Zwei Psychologen beobachten Lila und überlegen, wie sie weitergefördert werden kann. Im Gespräch ist die Übersiedlung in ein neues Heim, das ihren Fähigkeiten und Fertigkeiten eher gerecht werden könne. Lila: 'Vielleicht lerne ich da einen richtigen Freund kennen.' Kurz darauf lernt Lila Ricky kennen, einen Farmerssohn, der die gleiche Behinderung wie sie hat. Ricky lebt zu Hause und hilft seinem Vater bei der Arbeit. Der Vater lehnt Arbeitstherapien bei seinem Sohn ab, duldet das 'sich lustig machen' seiner Kollegen über Ricky am Stammtisch. Eine erste Begegnung von Ricky und Lila findet in einem Auto statt. Ricky summt eine Melodie, Lila fällt darin ein. Eines Tages veranstaltet das Behindertenheim ein Fest mit Picknick und Musik ('You are Special'). Ricky sieht aus der Ferne zu. Als Lila ihn entdeckt, sondert sie sich von der Gruppe ab und geht zu Ricky. Sie verbringen einige unbeschwerte Stunden zusammen, essen Würstchen, liegen im Gras, träumen und schauen den Wolken nach. Beide sind glücklich. Sie wollen sich wiedersehen. Lila will jetzt nicht mehr weg zur weiterführenden Therapie. Der Direktor: 'Freundschaft ist kein Ersatz für Therapie.' Die Psychologin: 'Ricky wohnt zu weit weg und kommt bestimmt nicht wieder.' Obwohl sich Lila weigert, wird der Termin ihrer Abreise festgelegt. Ricky erklärt unterdessen seinem Vater, dass er jetzt ein Mädchen habe und es besuchen wolle. Nach anfänglicher Weigerung fährt ihn sein Vater in die Stadt zum Behindertenheim. Inzwischen hat Lila, apathisch und traurig, das Heim verlassen müssen. Ricky sucht überall nach ihr, aber sie ist fort. Das letzte Bild zeigt Ricky in seiner gewohnten Umgebung, so wie es im Anfang war. The Oscar-winning short film 'Board and Care' is about two disabled young people with Down syndrome. Ricky hums a tune, and Lila joins in. One day, the home for the disabled organizes a party with a picnic and music ('You Are Special'). Ricky watches from a distance. When Lila spots him, she leaves the group and goes to Ricky. They spend a few carefree hours together, eating sausages, lying in the grass, dreaming, and watching the clouds. Both are happy. They want to see each other again. Lila no longer wants to leave for further therapy. The director: 'Friendship is no substitute for therapy.' The psychologist: 'Ricky lives too far away and will definitely not come back.' Although Lila refuses, the date of her departure is set. Meanwhile, Ricky explains to his father that he now has a girlfriend and wants to visit her. After initially refusing, his father drives him into town to the home for the disabled. Meanwhile, Lila, apathetic and sad, has had to leave the home. Ricky searches everywhere for her, but she is gone.
