Jason ist ein wilder, in der Schule unaufmerksamer und uninteressierter Junge. Einzig zu Tieren hat er ein warmes, liebevolles Verhältnis. Er freut sich, im Sommer im Wildpark aushelfen zu können. Aber sein Plan wird vereitelt, weil er gerade dann für die Nachprüfung lernen soll. In seiner Wut und Enttäuschung, auch dem Druck seiner Kameraden ausgesetzt, wütet er im Futterschuppen des Wildparks und in der Schule. Aus einem Versteck heraus beobachtet er, wie erschüttert sein Lehrer über die unglaubliche Zerstörungswut ist. In Jason beginnt eine Ahnung für sein Tun zu keimen. Selbst aufs äußerste erschüttert ist er, als er erfährt, dass viele Tiere im Wildpark verendet sind, weil sich unter die zerrissenen Futtertüten Gift gemischt hatte.

A boy learns, in very personal and painful terms, the emotional cost of vandalism. Jason lives in an affluent suburb, but he and his friends seem to have little to do besides letting air out of tires and phoning in false fire alarms. Jason, though, is very fond of the deer at the local park, and helps the warden at feeding time. When his English teacher informs him he must attend summer school, infuriated, Jason goes off on another spree of violence with his friends to the deer park where they accidentally mix poison with feed. They continue to the school and vandalize their teacher's classroom and ruin a 1st edition book. Later Jason learns that many deer have died, and he is left only with bitter self-recrimination, which may be the hardest punishment to bear. Perhaps, he has begun to question his own attitudes and values.
