Der Film handelt von einem arbeitslosen Piloten namens Ben Ensley, der den Auftrag erhält, gefährliche Unterwasserfotos von Haien zu machen. Um endlich wieder Geld zu verdienen, nimmt er den Job an und fliegt mit seinem Sohn Davy zu der weit entfernt liegenden Shark Bay. Beim Fotografieren wird Ben von einem Hai attackiert und schwer verletzt. Die einzige Chance für ihn zu überleben besteht darin, zurück in die kleine nordafrikanische Stadt zu fliegen, von der aus sie aufgebrochen sind. Davy schleift seinen auf einem Badetuch liegenden Vater zum Flugzeug und über eine aus Steinen und einer Kiste provisorisch errichteten Rampe ins Cockpit. Davy muss sich nun in den Pilotensessel setzen und Schritt für Schritt den Anweisungen seines Vaters folgen, um mit der Propellermaschine von der Insel abzuheben und der Route zurück zu folgen. Aber der komplizierteste und gefährlichste Teil des Fluges ist die Landung. Ben Ensley, der durch Blutverlust nur halb bei Bewusstsein ist, weist seinen Sohn über 'den letzten Zentimeter' an, den ein Pilot bei der Landung eines Flugzeugs spüren muss. Der 'letzte Zoll' verweist auch auf die schmale Grenze zwischen Leben und Tod der beiden Helden. The film is about an unemployed pilot named Ben Ensley, who receives an order to take dangerous underwater photos of sharks. To finally earn money again, he accepts the job and flies with his son Davy to the far away Shark Bay. While taking pictures, Ben is attacked by a shark and seriously injured. The only chance for him to survive is to fly back to the small North African town from which they set out. Davy drags his father, who is lying on a bath towel, to the plane and up a makeshift ramp made of stones and a crate into the cockpit. Davy now has to sit in the pilot's seat and follow his father's instructions step by step to take off from the island in the propeller plane and follow the route back. But the most complicated and dangerous part of the flight is the landing. Ben Ensley, who is only half conscious due to blood loss, instructs his son about 'the last inch' a pilot must feel when landing a plane. The 'last inch' also refers to the thin line between life and death for the two heroes.
