Description: 16mm Film - Children of Samoa - USA 1982 Directed by: John Anderson Kamera: Peter Read Ilasa and Mose live in the small village of Matautu (Lefaga) in the Pacific Island Upolu of Western Samoa. This film shows their lifestyle and that of their family. The children are seen at the small village school enjoying the village games and playing their part in the important task of gathering food for the village. The cooperative nature of the extended family concept as it exists in Samoa is clearly seen. Ilasa und Mose leben in dem kleinen Dorf Matautu (Lefaga) auf der Pazifikinsel Upolu von Westsamoa. Der Film zeigt ihr Leben und das ihrer Familie. foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Applause] begins very early in our village and as soon as the sun rises we have to get up our school starts at seven o'clock in the morning but before we go there are a lot of things to be done to help our parents [Music] [Music] my grandfather was ahead of our family yeah and he lives in the biggest valley in the village we allowed to do things to help him [Music] [Applause] we don't have to go to school but most of our parents say we should when I get to my students here at school some of the lessons will be given in English mostly is just beginning this and I think he sometimes finds this new game which had Miss French congratulations [Laughter] director is written by your friends [Music] my father has been working hard on the plantation appearance of single children including my cousin musi who has lived with us for a long time a grandmother came for me but after she died I bet she lived with my mother and father America I think he is about 35 grandchildren all together foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] there's also food to be gathered and mostly has been sent to get some coconuts [Applause] foreign [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] but we also have other foods such as yums bananas big fruit and fish [Applause] [Applause] foreign [Music] one another [Music] [Applause] today is Sunday and my uncle's happy pure in a big face first of all we eat some stones in the fire and the food is placed on top the food is then covered with leaves to keep the heat in and it cooks very quickly food from the room always tastes good [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] morning [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] my grandfather was always giving us food first he is the chief Messiah of our family and this is the way we are taught to share our speed [Music] [Music] [Music] I think Sunday is the best day of the week there was a plenty of good food to eat and afterwards we can rest or do things with our cousins laughs [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] I've been higher [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign
