On a hot summer day, a freight train presumably loaded with iron ore arrives at a small, lonely station in northern Sweden. The brakes screech, the train stops. It is hot. The brakemen on the wagons light cigarettes, wipe the sweat from their faces. The engineer oils the locomotive, a chicken clucks, the stationmaster reads the newspaper. An express train roars past, the line is clear again. The brakemen prepare to depart and flick their cigarettes out of the holders. But Kvist, one of the brakemen, a lean middle-aged man, climbs down and, to the astonishment of his colleagues and the stationmaster, stays behind. He has no desire to continue; the train must leave without him. The stationmaster is at a loss. Kvist takes a walk. He stops at a farmhouse, says hello to the farmer's wife, who is milking, and gets a drink of water. He talks briefly with the woman, who leans out of the window to pour water. Kvist drinks, strokes his mustache and says: 'I believe, if you live out here, you'll have many children. I like children.' Kvist has returned to the station, drinks water again, enjoys the flowers again, and sits down on the loading ramp waiting. His 'escape' is over.
