The play depicts daily life at the medieval Prunn Castle in the Altmühl Valley. Laudine, the steward's daughter, brings taxes to the castle, where the knight is expected to return from a military campaign. In the process, she gains insight into the castle's exterior and interior layout, its economic management, and - in several vivid scenes - the training in chivalric conduct. Through Laudine's eyes, the audience gains a basic understanding of life in a castle.
