Neither spontaneous career aspirations nor vocational guidance can guarantee that a young person's aptitude will actually match his or her chosen profession. Psychological aptitude tests have therefore become indispensable. This documentary film provides an insight into the testing procedures used at the Allgemeine Elektrizitäts Gesellschaft (AEG): A small hammer mechanism that has been disassembled into its individual parts has to be assembled in a functional way, linear drawing patterns have to be completed logically and prism-like bodies have to be reconstructed. Thinking tasks and an aptitude test follow. The results recorded on test sheets are evaluated and compared. In this way, a scientifically supported selection of applicants is obtained. The examiners' decisions are not certificates. They only provide information as to whether the applicant's aptitudes for technical design thinking meet the special requirements that are placed on an industrial skilled worker today. The test procedures described in this film were developed in conjunction with the Institute of Industrial Science at Berlin University. As the camera observes the examinees at work and then shows the very different results, it becomes quite clear how widely the talents of the young people differ. Some young people experience their first major disappointment here, while on the other hand, aptitudes recognized early on can be promoted in a planned manner in subsequent vocational training.
