Der Dokumentarfilm gibt einen Einblick in das Leben der Arbeiterfamilie Oga und in die Eigenart verschiedener Stadtteile von Tokio. Den Handlungsrahmen bildet ein Wochentag. Diese Rahmenhandlung zeigt die Familie beim Frühstück, informiert über die Wohnweise und die Gebräuche der Japaner und endet mit dem Abendessen und der Feierabendgestaltung in der Familie. Einmontiert sind Momentaufnahmen aus der Zehn-Millionenstadt. Beeindruckend sind vor allem die Aufnahmen vom morgendlichen und abendlichen Berufsverkehr. Täglich pendeln ca. 6 - 8 Millionen Menschen zwischen den Vororten Tokios und der Innenstadt hin und her. Trotz des raschen Ausbaus des U-Bahn-Netzes und trotz des kurzen Zugabstandes von zwei Minuten sind die U- und S-Bahnen hoffnungslos überfüllt. Auf den Straßen Tokios ist das Vorwärtskommen noch aussichtsloser; während der Rush Hour sind sie von rund 5 Millionen Autos verstopft. In einem weiteren Abschnitt werden Industriebetriebe vorgestellt und es wird auf das enorme Wirtschaftswachstum Mitte der 60er Jahre hingewiesen. Arbeitswille, Disziplin, Ausdauer, Neigung zu konformem Verhalten, zu Sparsamkeit und zu einfachen Lebensformen sind einige der Gründe für das japanische Wirtschaftswunder. Der Film enthält ferner Beobachtungen in den Einkaufsvierteln der Stadt. The documentary provides an insight into the life of the Oga working-class family and the characteristics of various districts of Tokyo. The plot is set on a weekday. This framework shows the family at breakfast, provides information about the Japanese way of life and customs and ends with dinner and the family's evening activities. Snapshots of the city of ten million people are included. The shots of morning and evening rush hour traffic are particularly impressive. Every day, around 6 - 8 million people commute back and forth between the suburbs of Tokyo and the city center. Despite the rapid expansion of the subway network and the short train intervals of two minutes, the subways and suburban trains are hopelessly overcrowded. On the streets of Tokyo, getting around is even more hopeless; during rush hour they are clogged with around 5 million cars. In another section, industrial companies are presented and reference is made to the enormous economic growth in the mid-1960s. Willingness to work, discipline, perseverance, a tendency towards conformist behavior, thriftiness and simple lifestyles are some of the reasons for the Japanese economic miracle.
