The documentary depicts the fate of European refugees from the exodus of German Jews from the Third Reich to the building of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961. The film shows that immediately after the Nazis seized power, the Jews were the first to be affected by the fate of refugees. The outbreak of the Second World War meant that many people were forced to abandon their ancestral homeland. Many European nations thus became victims of the Nazi expansionist drive. Then it was the Germans themselves who had to flee after the Allies reached German territory. With the end of the Second World War, however, the stream of refugees did not stop. The division of Germany led to a renewed stream of refugees. In addition, there are the refugee movements from the countries of the Eastern Bloc, especially after the Hungarian uprising in 1956. The film makes it clear that there are very different reasons for the flight. In the case of the Jews, it was the National Socialist racial policy that prompted them to emigrate. Many also became refugees as a result of decisions made at political conferences. The film tries to avoid a one-sided approach by providing a wealth of material. A special level of knowledge will be necessary for some of the depictions, for example to understand the fate of the Poles in Persia. The film conveys the insight that the National Socialist tyranny continues to have an impact today through the division of Europe.
